These replies and the OP are insane. Last year I started digging around in Japanese lit, and I found that there's actually a huge abundance of good stuff. Two contemporary authors I can recommend are Yoko Ogawa and Kirino Natsuo. Ogawa's thing is creepy, subdued literary surrealist horror. Although she might not immediately impress you with her weak characters and minimalistic plots, if you persist and engage deeply you'll find some impressive structural and thematic depths. Kirino's quite different. She's more of a mainstream thriller writer with nihilistic and femininist themes and highly engaging characters and plots. I know the feminism won't be popular around here, and she's a bit of a man-hater, but if you can get past it she can be both compelling on a plot-boiler level and fairly deep and relevant idea wise. She's also capable of literary depth. For Ogawa I'd recommend 11 Dark Tales, linked literary short fiction, while for Kirino I'd recommend Grotesque, a literary-horror novel exploring the inability to find love and meaning in contemporary life as well as gender dynamics and racial beauty standards.

I once had a Japanese woman, she was very pretty and very autistic and I think many men over there are otaku shut ins so it’s not like she was spoiled for choice.
