>Yelled at my fiancé for reading two Jodi Picoult books in a row
How do I get her to read real literature bros?
>>
>>25161100
you pick someone who reads highbrow lit in the first place if it's such a big fucking deal to you rather than try to change someone
what are you, a woman?
>>
>>25161100
beat her until she listens
>>
>>25161100
Women don't have the intellect to appreciate great works of literature
It's why they only read trashy books and watch reality TV
>>
yeah, stop trying to change people op. you're a real fag for that. even if she is a moron. you're the moron that held that morons hand and kept holding it
>>

>reminding us all of common knowledge

thanks anon, we're giving you two dollars an hour more starting monday
>>
>>25161100

If you were an actually worthy person, you would read your real literature on your own and live what you learned from it, hereby accentuating both the quality of yours and her lives.
Without being such a prudish little desk-goblin
>>
>>25161118
I agree. She'll resent you if you force her to read a bunch of Cormac novels or whatever it is you think is "real literature." You just have to accept that most women like simplistic nonsense, and that they really only like seeing the passion you have for better stuff, without needing to participate in it themselves.
>>
>>25161100
Literature isn't for women.

It wouldn't bother me so much except she wants to talk about it with me like it's worthy of discussion, plus whenever I would get one of my friends a copy of Growth of the Soil she'd rib me for never gifting her a copy. I buy her a nice vintage copy and what do you know, she hasn't touched it in two years
>>
>>25161252

oh, that is annoying. sorry op.

well. now's the time to laugh out of the side of your mouth casually at everything in this realm until she takes the hint and starts to believe that you're better than her in every way and starts seeking your approval

Let me give you some personal insight on the matter.

I've been with my wife for 10 years now. We met in high school, and I got her pregnant. She is and always has been a lazy person and a shit cook. I wouldn't even mind eating shit food if she at least made it on time. But she rarely did.

We'd get into screaming arguments constantly about how lazy and worthless she was. I felt like an asshole for it, but goddamn she was a real piece of work. The only reason I dealt with all this was for the kids, and also because the sex is great.

But one night, I got fed up. Not only did she get drunk, neglect the kids, and made me top Ramen for dinner, but she decided to give me attitude too. She was being real fucking bitchy. So I told my grandparents to keep an eye on the kids and told my wife we were going to go out and have dinner together. I drove maybe 3 blocks to a quiet area (we live in Oregon, it's not hard to find a quiet field) and I got out of the car, went around like I was going to open her door for her and let her out, and I just beat the shit out of her while she was still seatbelted. After a few punches, I asked her if she wanted to go back to her parents. She started screaming and yelling and said yes, so I beat the shit out of her again. Then I asked her what she wanted to do. She finally got smart and said she wanted to go home. So I took her home and dared her to start trouble. I even handed her my cellphone and dialed her mom's number on the drive home. I made her talk to her mom, while daring her to fucking say something.

Before that incident, I had never laid a hand on her. But I had always threatened it. I told her "one of these days, if you don't straighten up, I'm going to lay hands on you."

All my meals have been on time, and she just recently tried to make a meatloaf. It was mediocre, but I was just thrilled that she tried.

Do with this information what you will.

Don't force-feed her your favorite male authors, this will backfire. Give her contemporary woman writers that are also read by Picoult fans but have more "literary sensibilities" or however the fuck you want to phrase it. Jennifer Egan, Katie Kitamura, etc. Then if she likes one of those, you can say "oh, this book reminds me of this classic". Ease her in step by step.

OP isn't going to know women's literary fiction from his ass. He should be thankful she's not reading smut and go about his day.
>>25161657
Picoult is more middle brow dreck for respectable housewives in book clubs than the YA porn that women children read.
>>

>OP isn't going to know women's literary fiction from his ass
I figured that as well, that's why I gave him some suggestions.
>He should be thankful she's not reading smut and go about his day.
No disagreement here. But you never know, maybe his girl will enjoy reading something a little different in voice or style.
>>
>>25161100
Why does a man who yells at a woman for the books she reads get to have a girlfriend, while those of us who treat them with respect don't? It's not fair.
>>
Let her read what she wants.
Look at how many great female authors there have been throughout history - very very few. The vast majority of women are simply unable to appreciate great literature.
She's your fiancee - stop caring so much about what she reads. Instead you should care about whether her food is up to scratch, whether she has sex with you when you want and whether she inherently has a feminine, nurturing nature. This is what should determine whether she becomes your wife.

They watch reality TV because they're social creatures who are interested in the lives of others. Men do not watch better TV.

I just think it's funny how much of a superiority complex the posters here have when they're completely oblivious. They read books off a 4chan list and jerk themselves off over it. Meanwhile, without a 4chan chart, they'd never actually be able to separate the good from the bad, the worthwhile from the garbage.
Posters are already demonstrating they don't know Picoult from ACOTAR from Egan. It's all just one and the same because there's no flowchart.

There are plenty of male incels (/r9k/) who are interested in the lives of others but don't watch IQ-draining reality TV

Not just women writers, but nearly any contemporary, obscure, or out of fashion writers (though especially women writers, of course). No one here takes chances, no here actually explores what's out there, they just read whatever's fed to them through charts. This wouldn't be so bad if they weren't constantly stroking themselves off about it. No knowledge of the literary landscape except what harold bloom tells them to read.
>>
>>25161100
>help me interact like a human being
Okay anon. I'll help. Here goes: You don't get to tell others what to read, and they don't get to tell you what to read. You can tell her you'd appreciate if she reads whatever you have read, because you like what you have read and you want her to experience what you like, and in turn you might read what she has read, for the same purpose. But as long as you treat this as you having to cajole your wife into doing what you want, you will have a shitty relationship that almost certainly will end in disaster. Communication anon, and accepting that other people are other minds that have zero obligations towards you outside of what you have agreed on. That's the key.
>>
>>25165477
Okay, what‘s something contemporary that doesn‘t suck?
>>
>>25161570

>>
It is gay for a man to try and force his woman to read "better" literature, but you just know that female booktokkers and instragramers would love it if the roles reversed
>>
>>25166055
I mean, woman's whole psyche is just an extension (in reaction to) the male psyche. So of course
>>
>>25166059
women don't have a psyche, they have aesthetics and vibes
>>
>>25166261

>aestheticizes for the purpose of creating a defensive shield around their vibing flesh to protect against the delusion of what every male life force in the vicinity might do, might think, might suck on
