Literature peaked 3000 years ago, how is possible that the first book written is also the best book ever written

I don't think it's 'the best', but it's easily in my top 5. It's remarkable, the Odyssey doesn't quite hit me the same way.

Sure, maybe. But there are also anti-Augustan undertones.

You're mad. On a purely technical level, Virgil is above Homer. Where Homer shines are his characters.

It's not a real epic, and it's tremendously dull. Far too didactic as well

What’s wrong with didacticism? Plus, I can only give you the “dull” and “didactic” argument for the Adam segments, anything involving Satan or Eve feels grand and sonorous, should I say.

Agreed. The Epic of Gilgamesh was omegakino.

I love the Iliad and this is honestly hilarious. This is your initial response to this shit at first. It's hilarious how long these sections are with all this seemingly unnecessary backstory. But then you realize that Homer is simply showing how war affects us all, beyond those participating in the violence, and how life continues even after the "noble" sacrifice in battle. The warriors are more than just that, they have families, inheritances, land, lovers -- all who will be in mourning. Homer wasn't really pro-war.

Yeah, the odyssey isn't the grand adventure story that that cultural zeitgeist presents it as. It's really more of a story about hospitality

no ones ever heard of that. in every generation, every intelligent or rich man has read the iliad and the odyssey which is better. also i thought Job was the first book

Virgil never finished it for a good reason, anon.
It is absolute crap. It tries to claim the Romans as Trojans and that Homer's message of love is wrong, and supplants it with fealty and duty.
The Romans were a backward enough people, and Virgil felt bad for making the thing.
