Plath is a relatively mediocre author and the reason she is so well known is mostly that she is indeed a woman from the 50s and 60s who DID hate her life. Of course countless women hated their lives back then and for good reason, her suffering on the other hand gets connected to the overarching feminist hatred of that era of "late housewifery". In essence her life was extremely easy and she was a depressed and suicidal cunt, just like so many authors. Her prose is nothing special. Her themes are rather clichee but it is the fact that she wrote from a "lived experience" which gives her credibility and worth.Her books are not special in any sense. Are they worth a read? Perhaps. Depends on you. The first few pages of Bell Jar for example are really dull and unimaginative.
