Why did God give so much talent to someone with nothing to say?
>>

the man never wrote a bad sentence and never wrote a good book... fascinating
>>
>>25167578
Fucking true. Wow.
>>
Same reason God made you just smart enough to solve the captcha.

Least salty Updike reader.
>>
>>25167605
I'm not much for Updike, not much for realism in general.
>>
>>25167605
They get upset when you point out his flaws for some reason. Most of them are plotfags so they use him as a chance to say they actually do care about prose. Not that they really know what things like prose and structure are…

Couples is pretty good.

Please enlighten us

>They get upset when you point out his flaws for some reason. Most of them are plotfags
Are we still talking about Updike here or Pynchon/DFW fanboys?

Holy shit, /lit has somehow sunken lower. Didn't think we'd hit this pass, but now they're trashing Updike. Updike! Just go back to rereading Cormac for the umpteenth time, philistines. Leave the pleasures of Updike's exquisite observations into middle-class American life to the true readers.

Absolutely based post anon. Place is getting tiresome with all these cormac, dosto, and pynchon losers trashing real literature. We need more people like you to run them off. Godspeed.

I like when he talks ass

the definitive proof that you have to say something. that fiction is about having something to say first, and then, write beutifully if you can.
you need something interesting to say first.
we aesthetes have it all wrong, words will disappear without substance.
i dont know if you know the story of when fassbinder found out he just was doing artsy patsy kensit shit when he talk with douglas sirk and understand he have to make non-pretentious drama about people.
imagine if updike would have that kind of revelation, or every post modern writer really. the talent is there, but they are desperately trying to accomodate to a non-discoursive tone who kill drama and they still want to make drama out of it.

Yeah his sex obsession is annoying but his characterization in the Rabbit series is phenomenal, among the very best in American literature. He clearly did have things to say, and I'm wondering what your definition of saying something actually is, because I can nearly guarantee you have it backwards.
>>
its bad because it has sex and i dont have sex
>>
>>25167678
He can't without outing himself as a retard. All that really separates Updike's take on realism from the original realists is using subtext for what they relied on plot and exposition for. Updike is pretty much deminimalized Hemingway, he put back everything Hemingway took out. If you think Updike has nothing to say you are probably a plotfag who can't into subtext.

> They get upset when you point out his flaws for some reason. Most of them are plotfags
Damn, you called it. He even repeated “plotfag” so you know it hurt him

>be born
>get older
>watch things go awry

>his sex obsession is annoying
Only by the standards of today's low-test male.
Boomers smoked, drank, took drugs and held generally dismissive attitudes toward their physical health. Yet they still had voracious sex drives compared to zoomers.

grey wojak: sex is great and youre a puritan
white wojak: people talk about sex too much, sex is not as interesting as they make it out to be
pink wojak: actual reproductive sex is unobtainable to most men and if they get it once or for a year or two they must have put as much effort into it as they put into their actual food generating job

>Updike's exquisite observations into middle-class American life
you say this as if it's not all shit like
>Amy's rose-colored cuntlips sleek as a cherry Cadillac's fins, shimmying under her tennis skirt as she weeded the garden, on her knees, her lustful youth plunging a spade down and down again into the dark, hot earth. I adjusted my binoculars and tugged at my limp member. What did Amy know of privation, of need? A plump checking account at First National, a plump bust, two big chickens cooking in the oven, wanting for nothing. Soon summer evening would come and drape us all under its purple-splotched breast and I would dream of Amy with her nipples like taut blackberries ripe in the late humid heat. I fondled my soldier, my second self, my gleaming flagpole, and watched her pert buttocks slip behind her white fence and glide up her front stoop and vanish in the vaginal darkness of her front door.
