Why do people put these stupid plastic things in the pages of their books? I just bought this at the thrift store, every page has like 5 of them, and they abruptly stop at page 90.

I do it for prose study
female readers have a "note taking" culture where they copy down what the scene is depicting in simpler phrasing
could also have been a social media prop

some of the most schizophrenic minds occupy the bible annotation scene and i think that's a good thing
>>
>>25169995
i put them on lines that stand out to me. it's nice when I'm reminiscing about a book I read a while ago and I can quickly pull up some of my favorite parts. I don't ever write in books though, but I don't mind when I get a used book and there's some notes, especially when it seems like they're really old. I also like graffiti though, does a similar thing for me
in any case you can pull them off easily
>>
>>25169995
There's literally no reason to do this in fiction unless you're mailing passages you want to memorize later

I keep a book mark on some of my favourite pages of my favourite books even when I’m not reading them. I’ve never understood any circumstances wanted to scribble in them, if it’s non fiction I take notes on a separate book, one made for making notes.

There’s some anon who got a lot of shit in another thread for quoting the old Schopenhauer thing about women being immature. I DO want to disagree. But when I see things like this, I don’t think I can. Wuthering heights isn’t even worth taking notes on, because it’s fiction and not exactly hard to understand. What is up with these people?

I copied down quotations from In Search of Lost Time that I thought were well written, evocative, or in some other way something I would like to revisit. I made a simple text file where I copied them down alongside the page number, organized by volume.

I can't imagine color coding shit unless I was using the text for some kind of academic study. Do the people shown in this thread annotate only after completing the book once normally? >>25170060 for example, includes a highlighter for foreshadowing, something that I feel is difficult if not impossible to annotate on a first readthrough.
>>

I don’t even like it when people underline a simple passage.
>>25170166
They’re doing it for entertainment. And because they’re too dumb to actually think about what they’re reading.
>>
Its for annotation. I've been reading 'As I Lay Dying' and am annotating as I go along - I usually mark paragraphs/ sentences that are particularly well-written and circle words/phrases that are symbolic. Don't use highlighters though because that's gay.
I don't understand the people who claim its 'ruining' a book. The 'art' is not the physical book, it is the ideas and story contained within the book. Obviously, its different if its a rare first edition copy - the value there IS actually in the physical book.
Women love to make everything look cutesy. A lot of the girls at university love writing their notes in meticulous handwriting and colour-coding everything. It's usually a waste of time and does not aid at all in understanding the content. People just do it because it makes them feel better about themselves.

I don't believe I'm the same species as these creatures. Just an utterly alien way of being and living. Incomprehensible.
>>
>>25170190
>The 'art' is not the physical book, it is the ideas and story contained within the book.
Scribbling all over it will obscure the content therein, plus, I see notes made on the book that essentially simplify it for them. Put it somewhere else or something.

It’s pretty fucking dumb though and it’s like they care more about decorating it than they do reading the damn thing.

i guess that's one way to pass the time...
>>
>>25170190
If you annotate too often, you'll be more focused on annotating actually absorbing the text. Perhaps you'll nudge your brain into reading it rather mechanistically, making you less aware of the bigger picture and one-off items.
I think I've trained myself to code in a rather mechanical way, which is now bringing me many troubles.
>>
>>25170201
Because who wants to flip between their book and their laptop?
>>
>>25170077
She's trying to keep the main points in her mind and connect them which helps maintain a good memory of the rest. Why are you being like this? If you read Wuthering Heights you know how hard it is to remember a lot of it the year after you're done. But it's so good and actually it takes more than a year of thinking about to fully appreciate
>>
>>25170316

I wouldn’t know, thank god I don’t take notes in the first place, nor do I scribble shit onto a book. It makes little difference considering you’re halting your reading time regardless.

i put index tabs on fiction books for lines I like, but my WH copy has maybe 3 tabs. Looks like this girl is highlighting every time any character says something so idk, my best guess is just stationary porn shit. People love to get into pens and highlighters more than they actually have shit to write and highlight. I kinda get it, I had a mechanical keyboard phase at one point in my life
>>
>>25170839
Usually that’s for lines that are well written I presume too, something poetic or rich in prose? But yeah, just highlighting every line spoken as opposed to Brontë’s actual writing beyond the characters… well it feels like an insult almost, since it looks like it’s just plotfagging, there’s more to Emily than that!
>>
>>25170846
I mean she’s highlighting phrases she finds “important” or worthy or looking into further, which is fine. Ah, well, it’s their book they can do what they want with it. Whatever facilitates their experience, and at least they’re reading it.
