People used to read books. Perhaps not always great books, perhaps pulp thrillers written at speed, but books nonetheless. Reading was simply something done for enjoyment, by everybody.
Now this has been replaced by the phone.
Today reading is seen in the same way as earing vegetables, something done because it is good for you, not something done for enjoyment. Yet literacy declines each year. College students are unable to understand fiction that was considered easy in the past. These are students of English Literature, unable to comprehend Dickens. Is literature doomed? The only fiction that sells is romantasy, and people have started to see those books include AI prompts accidentally left in.
They are already saying that poetry had a good run, but it's over now. Soon they will say the same of the novel, and then the short story. Within 20 years flash fiction will be seen like we look on 1000 page books today.
