There are many tiers to poetry and many types of poetry. There is lyric poetry, satyrical poetry, burlesque poetry, nationalistic poetry, machinery-centered poetry, animal-centered poetry, scaly erotic poetry, etc.

Just find a hyper-specific niche and you too can become the best bard of your genre.

You'll actually find that most historically great poets at least of the last couple hundred years attempted to write fiction and failed, while most great novelists and short story writers attempted to write poetry and failed. People just have different aptitudes for different things.
