What is that even supposed to mean? The Triumph of Israbestis Tott is probably my favorite bit of Gass' writing, outshines the rest of the novel for me.

it mogs the rest of the book, which isn't particularly interesting

The Triumph of Israbestis Tott is only really interesting from a stylistic standpoint, just a vignette on its own and kind of pointless, but I find it incredibly interesting stylistically, amazingly well executed. I found the novel itself to be quite good and interesting, read it in 3 days once I stopped rereading The Triumph of Israbestis Tott and forced myself to go on. Need to reread that one soon, I have a much better grasp on Gass' style now and I suspect I missed a fair amount.

Have you got recommendations for secondary sources discussing Gass? I've read Omensetter's Luck, the Tunnel, and In the Heart of the Heart of the Country, but I feel I ought to re-read them all and would like some more ideas on the works to push me along. Would Gass' own essays help me draw more out of his fiction?
