It's been a couple of years and I must reread it but my memory is that the story, while pretty straightforward, as always with Perdue, is well told and quite delicately structured; that the prose, as always with Perdue, is very idiosyndratic, kind of angular, but hypnotic in its effect, full of little images and phrases that are repeated and varied; that he has a talent for very vivid imagistic writing; and that he succeeds impressively in putting you inside the mind of the main guy, who is loosing his reason somewhat, quite claustrophobic but satisfying to experience.Overall, it's not Perdue's greatest novel but it is very good. It's his only straightforward "romance" I believe. He is definitely an acquired taste. But it is the furthest thing from reddit I can imagine.
