Where have all the serious, urbane, book-reading men gone and why have they been replaced with women?
>>25179887men can have an edible, play video games and jack off all at their computers and its actually the closest thing to an ideal life for a goy, if you have never read de brevitate vitae
>>25179888you think, like if shakespeare and milton were around nowadays thats what theyd be doing?
>>25179887>Where have all the serious, urbane, book-reading men goneYou summoned me?
Looks like she’s more interested in showing off her slop and playing with her new ladder like a little kid with a new toy would, than actually reading, OP.
>>25179887most men think reading is a faggy waste of time
>>25179888Keklin on /lit/? Thought this’d be the last place I’d see such a thing.
>>25179904You dont post in /lit/ shelf threads?
>>25179914No, I don’t. I like talking about literature here about 70% of the time, if I’m completely honest with you. The other 30% is dedicated to indignant posts like the one you replied to.
>>25179887They are a significant buying segment. Everything will be catered to them. The algorithm will shove this down their throats so they, too, can be booktok girlies. Most of the guys I watch have half the production quality. They have goos arguments and thoughtd, but that doesn't sell clicks. You need the pageantry and confetti too.
>>25179923And they call us performative…
>>25179887In my (zoomer) experience most of my friends just don't have the attention span to care about reading. They see a book and a 20 minute youtube video about the same subject and they choose the video every time because it's quicker and comes with less commitment. They've never read a book past middle school so they don't know the depth and enjoyment a good book can provide. One of my friends gets all his information from instagram reels, and that seems to be enough for him. On the other hand, my only friend that does read, only reads smut on archiveofourown. So do with that as you will.
>>25179887Broken neck in her future, lmao.
>>25179887>tattoos>hey look at my ass!™Dropped.
>>25179887I wonder who bought that for her? Or did she whore herself on the tiktok for it?>>25179933Here’s hoping. God I hate women. Being recently divorced may have altered my view but boy did it alter my view
>>25179908>most men think reading is a faggy waste of timeThis. You can complain that women took over literature, but it's equally true that most men simply left it behind.
>>25179887The publishing gatekeepers, especially for fiction, were taken over by women who forgot how market segmentation works and that while women are the bigger audience, they should still market and try to sell books to men, in a way that actually appeals to them.>>25179908>most men think reading is a faggy waste of timeThere's always been that kind of thinking. You had to be either rich to read or if poor, have to read the Bible. Blue collar guys 70 years ago weren't making reading out to be masculine. It's the middle class who has had their literary habits devastated as it became replaced with television.
>>25179887Reminder that women don't even actually reach much, they simply BUY more books than men purely to make performative shit like this. While men actually read books like the classics or slop like self-help scam books women are mostly skimming their monster-fucking smut novels to skip to the sex, masturbate spiritually and post about how "spicy" the book is on tiktok or instagram then move on.
>Anon! Wake up, Anon! It's time for another /lit/ woman hate thread!Tiresome>>25179987>they should still market and try to sell books to menWhy would they market books to a demographic (men, presumably straight, who read) that for all intents and purposes does not exist
>>25179994It's easy to complain about the quality of female readers, but not so easy to get males to care about reading again./lit/ opts for the former out of cope and spite.
>>25179998Because we know for a fact it used to exist. You aren’t showing much business acumen
>>25179891Unironically yes
>>25179994This. She probably hasn’t read half of those books. It’s all decorative and that’s obvious by the arrangements.

>>25180014so you want publishers of contemporary literary fiction -- already a dying art form that a vanishingly small percentage of the american public interacts with, and already a business that's very difficult to break even in, let alone make a profit -- to spend several years losing money by resurrecting a demographic that literally, not figuratively, died out decades ago? and at the end of this long decade of financial humiliation, publishers will see sales figures that, at best, are a fraction of sales to women readers, plus all the revenue lost from marketing to "the male reader" for several years?>Yes.then put up the money or shut up>I don't have the money but someone should do this!why, when they won't make any money, and in fact will lose money>Because they just should okayuh huh
>>25180046>>>Because they just should okayThis but unironically.
>>25180046You’re exposing yourself as a business brainlet. How about don’t go into literature as a business unless you aren’t invested in expanding a business. Giving up on an entire sex is very stupid but it’s what the industry has done. Tons of businesses have made tons of money by learning how to market to women and not just men, like video games. You’re being misandrist by writing off men as a lost cause
>>25179887Holy trust fund…
>>25180046Why are you trying to make strawman arguments? Why would you think it not lucrative to market towards half of the world’s population (even if litfic is more niche than it ever was)? Why are you, dear anon, a fucking retard?
>>25180081>no counterarguments just confused upset babble about vidyaokay>>25180073I also think they should market to men, it'd be great if there were more of us, but then I remember the is/ought distinction and I sit back down, deflated and disillusioned. like it or not, straight men do not read literary fiction. the ones who do read seriously are all either here, on rsbookclub, or in tiny twitter circles
>>25180093if it's so lucrative then why isn't it being done right now? if it's so profitable then why are we having this argument? seems like if you were correct it'd already exist, but this isn't what we see. I get that you're frustrated and upset but that doesn't change the financial realities of the industry. please don't get more upset and start screeching /pol/ memewords at me, I'd rather not do that tonight. I just finished picrel (very good, strong recommend) and now I'm going to get high and play tf2 in a One Thousand Uncles server
>>25180101You’re probably a loathing man of inaction. Always thinking and reading never acting or doing
>>25180101>straight men do not read literary fiction. the ones who do read seriously are all either hereLook, I’m not saying I think the population of straight male readers (of which I constitute) of literary fiction is larger than you say it is, but what harm can be done from trying again in the future? What would be the issue marketing a book that appeals to everyone? As opposed to alienating an entire demographic? I suppose you could argue that if it’s a man writing, then it’s intrinsically going have masculine sensibilities, with the same applying to women. Which would likely alienate one or the other, regardless of its sex neutral zeal. Hmm, it seems I’ve answered my own question. I understand where you’re coming from, I still think >>25180081 makes a good point in saying that marketing to men could get them back into reading in theory at least. Maybe I’m just hopeful and naive.

>>25180294>>25180297Is it April Fool's day already?
>>25180294It’s not funny
>>25180046You'd have a point if the publishing industry's pivot towards exclusively catering to women had paid off with increased sales, but it hasn't. As you pointed out, literary fiction has continued to fizzle out and it's because women only want to read romantasy rape porn slop. Now you just look like a big stupid idiot.>why won't men read modern literary fiction written by brown foids on the subject of grievance politics and growing up brown and female???>it's probably cause men are stupid and wanna play vidya or something, idkThe few men who do read, read the classics, because they're the last genre of serious fiction that hasn't been enshittified to hell and back. That's who publishers should be marketing to, but because the industry has been captured by feminists and homosexuals, it's going to continue to die because they don't want to market to men and they don't know how to market to men.
>>25179887>Where have all the serious, urbane, book-reading men gone and why have they been replaced with women? They went to The Manosphere podcast circuit to listen to Rogan and Tate explain to them how reading, green tea and fibre are for fags.
>>25179887Big Publishers have decided to cater specifically to women and minorities for the past 10-15 years. Men seeing that publishers have abandoned them have gone elsewhere for literature like self-published novels and the recent explosion in web novels geared toward male fantasies. Those aren't women paying for for patreon memberships for books about Male Power Fantasy.
>>25179887Your manufactured sense of ownership over the simple act of reading is no more and your tears and frustration are necessary for growing into that understanding.
>>25179887They're reading in their parents basement. Right where society left them.
