By closing our eyes and plunging into ourselves, we can feel the pains and suffering of our being in its most intimate and essential character. We observe the torrent of our desires and their incessant metamorphoses. We observe within ourselves how we are the most wretched, miserable, and condemned of animals. For a few moments, we cease to see and begin to feel. It is with certainty that we can affirm that all this unrealized and purposeless suffering would not exist if we, the most wretched, had not been victims of the birth-spring. How can we inflict such suffering upon those we swear to protect and love? Should we not feel compassion for those who are in their natural state: non-existence?
