>he reads secondary literature instead of the work itself
Why people do this? Like, go read the book yourself, nigga. Why you want people to tell your their shitty interpretation of it.

People wants products. Plato and Aristotle are more appealing if someone put them together in a nice book and sell it under the premise it will improve your life.

We all know you're a genius capable of superhuman understanding, Mr. Frogposter, but most of us gain insight from other people's interpretations.

the value of aquinas is that he lists all the arguments. so when you listen to the summa theologiae audiobook, you hear all the arguments, now you know theology. after you finish reading the Bible you listen to eusebius to get some side anecdotes that were lore. be sure to check out basils letter to young men about the use of greek literature. justin martyrs name is interesting, ius as the latin principle of law and order, and his habilitationschrift trypho is sort of the next thing after the Bible

Normally you're supposed to read both. Only good for some works. Usually the introduction and the preface are secondary literature enough
