How can people read shit with genuinely terrible prose? If something I am reading has bad prose I can’t finish a single page.
>>
How do you even know what had good prose and what doesn't? Can you write "good prose" to be able to tell the difference?
>>
>>25184157
I can tell by the vibes.
>>
>>25184168
I see.

You know it when you see it. I doubt ESLs or non-natives of other literary countries would understand. It’s about flow, brevity, sentence length, word usage, cadence, ect. Redditors and the publication industry at large don’t understand what good writing is either. The insane devotion amateurs have to the fake rules like “show don’t tell” or “don’t use purple prose” is proof enough the average troglodyte doesn’t know what they’re reading.
>>
you just need to find the rhythm of speech in the writing. even annoying people are intelligible if you know how they like to talk.

Nigger says this then goes on to read translated Tolstoy.
>>
>>25184493
I don’t think you should read translated work thougheverbiet

The meaning is important, not the words. There are more effective or more economical ways to use words, but that is the concern of the writer, not the reader. If you cannot get through bad prose, you have a skill issue.

Read mtl chinese slop for a decade then come back.

Nta but poetry too, naturally has a rhythmic, flowing quality to it; once you’ve mastered that rhythm, you can try applying it to prose. They’re very different of course and good prose is going to be more akin to a long, meandering river with a gentle flow, or an undulating, tumultuous stream, depending on what it is you’re reading. This of course is opposed to poetry’s more transient and musical qualities. But anyone is struggling to discern good prose from bad prose should definitely try some poetry first even if you have to read it aloud.

Ouch + Based

Sometimes you just have to power through. I got to the end of this short essay and when I say the prose was awful, I mean AWFUL. Here, take a look for yourself

NTA but I can write good prose and I could prove it by posting my latest publication. Two things that constitute good prose are clarity and artistry. There are a lot of other factors such as those noted in >>25184570 but those are the big two. "Clarity" should be clear but I'll elaborate on "artistry:" comprehending the meaning should be an enjoyable experience in itself. Think of it like decorating a cake. You might not improve the flavor (which in this metaphor is the meaning or the content) but you are improving the experience, and that counts for a lot.

That's called purple prose and is probably the opposite of artistry
>>
>>25183974
Most people are hylics and will consume whatever is put in front of them and say it’s good no matter what.
>>
>>25184718
No, purple prose is like decorating a cake with caviar or gold foil or some other extravagance. It might be gaudy but it's better than not bothering to decorate at all (i.e. beige prose).
>>
>>25183974
This is why I could never read web novels even if I approached them with the dumb fun angle, the fucking middle school tier prose feels like poison to my soul
>>
>>25183974
Because they're stronger than you, obviously.
>>
>wanking the words on the page instead of the content of the text
Games and movies seem more your speed. Stick to those.
>>
>>25183974
>prose fags getting filtered by plot chads yet again
your flowery language is faggy and your shit's all retarded
>>
>>25184713
>clarity
Inconsequential, artistry is all that matters.
>>
faggot pseud
>>
>>25184178
if your prose was good it would've been pleasant to read what you posted
>>
>>25183974
Is prose or plot more important?
Yes, I am a pleb
>>
>>25184178
ESL here, I can tell good prose in my language and at least three other languages. You just need to read a lot and develop actual taste. It's not some secret anime skill.
>>
>>25184922
If you want to be successful. Plot.
>>
>>25184922
If you want to attain enlightenment. Prose.

I'm not writing a book. One doesn't have to be an expert chef to know what a high quality meal is.
