Has frequent reading improved your vocabulary and do you use it? Do you use "flowery" language when talking to people IRL/online?
Language should be clear and precise. I don't want to read your purple slop.
i think it has improved my understanding of when/where to use words in addition to my vocab. the point of verbal communication is to communicate, right, and when you use technical or poetic words in contexts where nobody knows them you just sound like an asshole. but also, this makes me appreciate that authors use flowery and weird language in writing contexts since most of those words are never going to appear irl/online, and its nice to have a place where they appear at all. ive found myself wanting everyday speech to be dumber and writing to be more flowery, the more ive readi do not use flowery language irl/online unless its funny or euphemistic
>>25185392No, at most it has provided a counterbalance to the constant ebonics and wigger speak I'm constantly exposed to.
>>25185392>when talking to people IRL/online?as a meme, otherwise keep it in lit
>>25185392When i was a kid i was put in remedial english and almost held back. I ended up spending a lot of time reading books. Within several years i was top 1% reading comprehension on standardized testing.Ended up getting out of it and into drugs and my mind atrophied but i have put in steady effort over the last few years and i can tell i already grew back a brain cell or two ;)Putting in work is as or more important if you are not a genius than being smarter than average.
>>25185392Yes, yes, and yes. But the way I write is so awkward and stilted and verbose that I’ve been accused of using AI on a few occasions, and I’m very pedantic with my grammar.
>>25185552Uhhh huh, Rajeesh, whatever you say.
>>25185552Just stop being a pompous faggot about it then and let it come naturally. You make it sound like you’re trying to impress people. I used to think grandiloquence was cool too until I turned 18.
>Has frequent reading improved your vocabularyYes.>and do you use it?When needed. Although I at least try to choose what I say based on level of specificity needed, connotations, denotations, and how likely the vocab is to be understood/how common it is, with a bit more variance to avoid sounding repetitive or for flow.IMHO, if you sound like you wrote something with a thesaurus at hand, you fucked up. If a word has enough more common alternatives, then you need a really good reason to use it, like you're trying to sound flowery or you're doing an acronym.>Do you use "flowery" language when talking to people IRL/online?Not intentionally
>>25185392it's actually really interesting. you should see how people write when writing xianxia fanfic.
I don't use poetic language in conversation no unless the conversation is about something cerebral
