I find him fascinating. Haven't read enough of him to judge really, but

>humanities thinker
Reading his correspondence w/ Evola seems like quite an impressive project to achive some sort of viable academic "traditionalism"'; something with an originaly guénonien therefore authentically spiritual impetus carried out with great patience in the not entirely favouable environment of mid-century US academe. Pretty impressive

>literary icon
I know Romanians who would say yes. Most here in west would agree w/ >>25186522 but if his novels were translated -- maybe they are I don't know -- if they were known about perhaps we would say otherwise

>Eastern European
Clearly correct geographically but it feels like a distinct sphere to me.

Judge Holden uses his name as a pun when accusing the kid:
>Where is Shelby, whom you left to the mercies of Elias in the desert, and where is Tate whom you abandoned in the mountains?
"Mercies of Elias in the" - Mircea Eliade

Eliade's idea of profane time on earth being converted to Sacred time by reenactment of myth and rituals has strong overlap with McCarthy's version of Gnosticism.
