Why are westerns like this?
>>25186943to remind us that the comfortable societies we enjoy now are built on the literal blood of those who came before us
>>25186947and that if it were not for the constructs we've taped together through thousands of years of thought and introspection we'd be murdering each other in cold blood without remorse for any modicum of gain like any common and base animal
>>25186943the bison skull mountain photo is one of the most demonic and monstrous photos ever taken. utterly abhorrent what was done to the bison herds, one of the first signs of the times as modernity accelerates towards the apocalypse
>>25186951If our ancestors hadn't done it for us, we'd have to do it ourselves.
>>25186943It's justified propaganda for state control and civilization more broadly.
>>25186983>An estimated eight million bison roamed the United States in 1870, but just 20 years later fewer than 500 of the iconic animals remained. The mass slaughter provided a brief economic boon to some newly arriving settlers, hunters and traders of the Great Plains who sold the hides and bones for industrial uses.https://news.emory.edu/stories/2023/08/esc_bison_impact_24-08-2023/story.html
>>25186987definitely some westerns were propaganda that wanted you to be thankful for a strong centralizing hand, but a lot of them portray the encroaching feds as the villain. red dead redemption 1 for example, pictured in OP, pretty clearly portrays the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the antagonists to the simple-but-genuine John Marston who represented the average American frontiersman and their ambition. Marston was even double-crossed by the feds and forced to do their bidding before being disposed of after he served his usefulness out
>>25186943i typically consume sci fi / fantasy media. is blood meridian like fallout new vegas? will buy it immediately if so
>>25187004not really. Blood Meridian is a lot of prosaic violence in the intent of expressing a person's inclination towards action-as-expression and exertion of will. McCarthy uses violence as language. New Vegas just uses apocalypse as a backdrop for roleplaying, you can become a McCarthy-like character in Fallout but it's not necessary to the game.
>>25187011is it in first person? i cannot consume media in the first person
>>25187011i find that because of McCarthy's tendency to use violence as a vehicle for message delivery he is pretty approachable to gamers and general audiences for the same reason. many video games and movies use violence as the medium through which the plot is advanced and the player/viewer is satisfied by means of gameplay/protagonist action in defeating enemies and overcoming opposition>>25187013it's written in third person, and an impersonal third person at that
>>25187000Fair point. I haven't played red dead but I did play new vegas and while they acknowledge there are problems with the encroaching state (NCR), they're relatively minor compared to the alternatives. The most painful part from a literary perspective is, possibly, the disenchantment of living in a world that's increasingly controlled and regulated.
>>25186983>>25186991Kill all wypipo
>>25186943/lit/erature?Nobody here as read genre Westerns.
>>25187021>i find that because of McCarthy's tendency to use violence as a vehicle for message deliveryI don't think you have read the book
>>25187042what a worthless post. extrapolate and engage in a real discussion or feel free to eat the dandruff off my ballsack
>>25187045I said all that needed to be said
>>25187047which would be exactly nothing at all. your concession is accepted
>>25187051You sound insecure. Perhaps I hit too close to home
>>25187055>you rn
>>25187059>can't even greentextLmao
>>25187093you write like a redditor trying to fit in. you'll only influence retards with posts like that. try saying something based on a book next if you can
>>25186991cute discord gif
>>25187000you forgot to mention that marston was a criminal wanted for many murders and robberies also rdr1 writing was shit where every single character is a caricature
Americans worship violence, blood and death
>>25186983>>25186991YEEEE HAWWWW *spits backer* them here buffalo bison whatever those red folk call ‘em make for some rootin tootin target practice ain’t it so fellers?! *shoots akimbo colt single action army revolvers in the air*
>>25186943John Marston was one cool cookie. Video games suck in general but he definitely contributed towards making that game fun. Didn’t ever play the second game because I stopped playing them years ago but it looks kinda dull.
>>25186983>>25186991What's the point of posting like an FYPnigger on an anonymous image board where you don't receive any money.
>>25187536>FYPniggerWhat does that mean?
>>25186983Where are the mountians of cattle and pig skulls? Do they grind them up right after processing?
>>25186991Nah, the government paid for every buffalo killed because they wanted to starve the natives. There is literally transcriptions of the time. Not sure why they use those bullshit excuses. What industry existed in the plains before WWI? There were not even trains to move the pelts and bones...
>>25187708Look up "bone pickers". They're actually mentioned in the epilogue of Blood Meridian.
>>25187766this is very true but not mutually exclusive from the settlers using hides and bones for profit and recapitalization. bones got grinded up and used as fertilizer especially>>25187708therre werent millions of cows and pigs roaming for thousands of miles across the plains
>>25186983>>25186991man has made a trash heap, and should get used to living with the rats, roaches, raccoons, skunks, and skeeters. this is not a world for bison or bears any longer
>>25187777>>25187778I'm asking about today. We slaughter more cows and pigs each year than the peak of the buffalo hunts. Where do the bones go nowadays?
>>25186943Because you refuse to read Little House on the Prairie.
>>25187925Have there been any positive westerns that have gained as much traction as the grimdark ones?
