>You spent your entire life never reading a book.
>Whenever someone dared suggest improving their mind, whenever someone told you to "Start with the Greeks"
>You laughed. You never started with anything.
>Well... today, you finally will.
>Your arms and legs are bolted to this chair.
>Four rusty iron hooks have been driven straight through your thighs and biceps, one in each limb.
>Impaled on each hook is a single blood-soaked page torn from the foundational works of Western literature:
>one from Homer's Iliad, one from Homer's Odyssey, one from Plato's Republic, and one from Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.
>These are the Greeks you were always told to start with.
>Above you hangs a large glass vat of concentrated sulfuric acid. In exactly 60 seconds, the supports will fail and it will pour down, burning through skin, muscle, and bone until nothing of you remains.
>To survive, you must start with the Greeks, in quite a literal manner.
>You have to bite down on each page, rip it free from the hooks embedded in your own flesh using only your teeth, and then read every single word loudly and clearly.
>Miss a single word, or hesitate longer than three seconds... and the acid releases immediately.
>You mocked knowledge your whole life.
>You thought the classics were pointless.
>Now the only way to live is to tear the Greeks out of your body... and force them down your throat.
>Live... or die.
>The choice is yours.

These types always have a few nonfiction books that they really like though. He probably recommends Carnegie and Atomic Habits to people unironically, and maybe the Art of War and also some book with a title like "How to Make Money" that he remembers from his early 20s.

What's caused this growing anti-intellectualism among the rich? What happened to them jerking each other off over how much more cultured and refined they were than us?
It's like we're all trying to be as animalistically pleasure seeking as possible and some people are able to indulge in way more worldly pleasure than others and most people just agree that is a good thing worth striving for. That or they try to be condescending from their computer screen's while being equally uncultured.

they still are pretentious, but now they openly devalue virtue
