Le Roman de Perceforest is an underappreciated masterpiece. I understand it's length makes it a problem, but The abridged English translation is an absolute romp, and even predates le morte d'arthur. It was being written during the hundred years war and reminds me of Fantasties by George MacDonald blended with adventure time, but medieval. Has anyone else found unappreciated excellent medieval literature?

the robin hood balladsthe actual english legend far more than king arthur
>>25187348>predates le morte d'arthurThis is such a stupid statement. The Morte is a translation of the Lancelot-Graal cycle, to which Perceforest is a prequel.
>>25190796It does though
>>25187348For those interested in history, I recommend Templar of Tyre's Chronicle. It's fragmentary and all over the place, but it's worth it for the siege and battle of Acre. I also liked the bits about Italian republics flexing on each other by minting coins and erecting banners in the ports of their rivals.Villehardouin is also excellent, 4th crusade being the entertaining fuck up it was. Also don't forget to read Robert of Clari's account! It's nice to compare them: with Ville you get the bigger picture of involved commander and with Robert you get the "common" knight's perspective. Robert of Clari also tends to provide more details.I expected to feel more pity for the Byzantines though.
>>25192250This is like saying Infernal Affairs 2 predates Infernal Affairs because The Departed came out after Infernal Affairs. You're retarded.
I've read the Mabinogion, Irish sagas, Beowulf, Genesis B, Gawain and the Green Knight, Song of Roland, Érec et Énide and CligèsI don't really care for Medieval literature, Romances are just not that interesting but I do like Beowulf
>>25192452What's retarded about giving context for a niche work? The world of the author was the world of the hundred years war and the black death. Le Morte and Perceforest are both late medieval encyclopedic collections of chivalric folklore.>>25192638Gawain and the Green Knight and Song of Roland are two of my favorites, I'm reading Beowulf now. Long epics can be worth the time but I really like the shorter works like these.
