If I can't read him in the original German, what would be the best work for me to start with? Is "The Sorrows of Young Werther" the best place to start or would you recommend something else?
>>
>>25189024
It is time for the Goethic period to make a come back
>>
>>25189079
still faust
>>
>>25189024
Shakespeare soulmogs Goatse
>>
>>25189326
you did read it in german, right?
>>
>>25189330
Yep, the Schlegel–Tieck translations
>>
>>25189333
your evasion is pretty telling
>>
Hard to say, it’s between Milton, Shakespeare, Dante and him. I don’t feel like you can rank those men.

Petrarch mogs Dante. If Eliot understood this he‘d probably have written more than one incredible poem which was largely Pound‘s work anyway.
>>
>>25189617
Pound, the guy that violently detested Petrarch as a corrupter of poetry...
>>
>>25189602
Shakespeare yes Dante no because Melville mogs him
>>
>>25189651
Wow, a Melville fan with a retarded opinion. Imagine my surprise. Let me guess, you also like McCarthy?
>>
>>25189024
That would be Homer
>>
>>25189079
Werther is fine as a start.
>>25189319
You don't have to start with the best work.
>>
>>25189079
I hated Werther, but that's probably because I had to read it in school. Faust and some of his poetry is cool though.
>>
>>25189651
That’s fucking stupid. Melville is brilliant but you can’t very well compare these men with different styles; though he isn’t dissimilar from Shakespeare. If I were myself going to place some more modern writers among those greats, I’d only place him, Tolstoy, Joyce and Proust. Nobody else has ever reached the heights of Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe, Milton.

Gerter

>>25189337
Methinks the anglomutt doth be miscomprehending.
>>
>>25189658
Hey now, his opinion is retarded but Melville is brilliant; shut your mouth.
>>
>>25189079
English from German is always better in translation than it ever was in German anyway.
If it's translated to Swedish that's even more beautiful. (As is English into Swedish.)
>>
>>25189024
