Yale University Press thinks Maya Angelou is the face of poetry.

I mean, why would it be, say, John Milton? No, it had to be the female poet of such saccharine writing that every quote I've seen attributed to her just as plausibly could have been attributed to Oprah Winfrey.

They could simply have chosen Emily Dickinson for the cover. It would be somewhat “inclusive”, because she is a woman, and at the same time it would be a proper choice, because her poetry and originality are more than great, they are frightening.

If someone with her metaphorical inventiveness and verbal power had written the Quran or the prophetic books of the Bible it would almost seem like something created by someone who actually had heard the voice of God and had angels and seraphs as family members to gossip and share stories.

I have no idea who this cooness is. But judging from the replies here. She isn’t very good. Typical for modern American education

Fucking this. No woman has come close to being as good a writer as her except maybe George Eliot. And no American other than Melville.

I agree. What she wrote about goes beyond her time and whatever ideologies were being cooked up, a true mystic-poet, which is why she filters the general reading public: unto the ground their heads are yoked.

Kek that gif caught me off guard I’m still laughing now HAHA
But yes, I hope it wouldn’t be too bold to say that she very well may be the greatest female artist to have ever lived.

Li Qingzhao has got to be up there.

it might as well be, potery died with the modernists, pound, elliott, anything after is just minorities writing bad free verse through the lens of hubristic identity politic

Good verse still exists, it's just that most of it is published in the form of sound recordings set to music rather than in print now.

Lyrics are generally shit and those considered to be greatest lyricists of all time, though better than any contemporary poet, are still mediocre at best.

Caged Bird
By Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

actually a good poem
funny how she's heralded as the queen of MFA poetry, but her poem uses rhyme and meter
