Hello! I'd like to start a new general where we read through the Vampire Hunter D novel series written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and translated into English by Kevin Leahy. I've posted an identical thread on /a/ because I'm unsure which board would be more appropriate and have set up a strawpoll for those interested to vote on. I do this because while they're novels, the series has spurred several Manga and Anime adaptations making it /a/ adjacent. However, the main focus of these threads will be on the individual novels as we read through them.

Currently, I've only ever seen the anime movie, Bloodlust, but have acquired the first three volumes. I'd like to read through the series and see if any other Anons would care to join me. I think I'll aim to post this general once a month on the 13th (because it's a spooky number) which will give us enough time to read the next Volume. Each Volume seems to only be around 200 pages, meaning about 30 days between threads should be enough time for everyone to finish but I'm open to extending or shortening that time if others feel I should.

As of right now, there are 30 volumes and The Readers Guide translated into English, meaning this book club can go on for quite some time. In these threads, I'd like to discuss the books in depth and see other peoples opinions, reviews, and impressions or just hang out. Also, any official interviews, reviews, or news clippings for the series are more than welcome in these threads. If (you) are interested, please post a reply and aim to finish Volume 1 by May 13th.

I'll provide a google drive I've set up containing every volume currently in English here: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/2/folders/19YrG2dC2B5vQ_eaYrfe_QD4e1ljveOSH

Vote here for which board you think this should be posted on in the future:

Sounds good op. Which one u do u want to start with?

I'd like to go in release order. I'm aware it's an anthology but I think starting with Volume 1 would be best because I'd like to see the series unfold.

Here's what the first thread will look like:

The Vampire Hunter D Book Club - Volume 1 Thread

Beautiful Man edition

>What is this?
A monthly thread where we discuss the Vampire Hunter D novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and translated into English by Kevin Leahy. Currently, we've only finished Volume 1.

>If I don't start reading now, I'll NEVER catch up!
Not true. The series is an anthology but it's recommended that you at least read Volume 1 to get a proper grasp of the setting. Feel free to just skip to whatever volume we're on.

>What else can we talk about?
Avoid discussing volumes we haven't read yet because I too am experiencing this series for the first time. However, discussion of previous volumes and other entries in the series like the movies, manga, and comics are welcome. But keep in mind discussion should mostly be centered on the months current volume.

>When's the next Book Club?
The 13th of every month. If you'd like to join the next one, finish Volume 2 by June 13th.

>Where can I read them
Read the books here: https://mega (dot) nz/folder/M1RD3IqI#EgmOfATaz5QkMVqCtZ2xtQ
You can also buy physical editions on websites like Amazon or other online retailers. The most accessible versions are the Omnibuses. Individual volumes can be pricey and are difficult to track down.

>Volume 1 blurb
12,090 A.D. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under three hundred years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires-and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.

Every village wants a Hunter-one of the warriors who have pledged their laser guns and their swords to the eradication of the Nobility. But some Hunters are better than others, and some bring their own kind of danger with them...

Fucking /a/ is outposting us.
>>

Then, my second post would be my own review along with discussion questions for other Anons. I'll also post the illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano (more or less to bump the thread) and anything else I can find that's relevant to whichever volume we're on. Currently, I don't have plans to dump any of the manga but I can see myself doing that after going through all the volumes. Again, I'd very much like to see others tag along and post their own thoughts too!

I posted this and the one I'm replying to on /a/ as well. It looks like we'll be doing the general there but I'm going to keep the strawpoll open just in case a number of people actually want it hosted on /lit/. If you guys don't care, just let this thread die because I'm probably not going to post on this one anymore.
>>
>>25192275
Do you guys even do bookclubs here or anything? I don't really browse /lit/. It would be so funny if there was more motivation to do a group read for a series on /a/ instead of the board dedicated to reading lmao.
>>
Good initiative OP, but you chose a series that will take at least 5 years to read through if everyone is reading them at the pace of 1 entry a month. I don't really see how you can keep the momentum and interest of anons for that long
>>
>>25190868
you should post this on /tg/ too to see if theres any interest

THE YOUTH WITH THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTENANCE ARRESTED THE VILLAGERS.

whenever they come up they migrate do discord
no one has the cajones

Not OP but 250 pages per novel, which I assume will be easy to read due to it being japanese and kindof shonen, is perfectly done in one month while also reading other books.
Count me in OP!
>>
Maybe /jp/ too.
>>
i read 2.5 of these books in 2007 and while i liked them at first i could already tell into the second and certainly into the third that they were all going to be basically the same so i stopped reading

Fuck off newfag
>>
>>25190868
I watched the movie and played the PS1 game years ago. I'd like to read the books, but isn't one of the ongoing light novel series that will probably never end as long as the author is alive?
>>
>>25193542
Take in consideration that fans believe 2 is the worst of the franchise and usually they skip over it - which can't be done in a first read because it introduces D's past
>>
>>25193628
D's past gets brought up again dozens of times throughout the series. Outside the multi-parters and Dark Road > Tyrant's Stars you don't need to read the books in any order, especially if you've seen the movies. They're styled like pulp novels.
>>
>>25193628
Oh interesting. I also didn't care for the second book (Raiser of Gales right?) and I'm somewhat glad to know that this is a standard opinion.

I remember enjoying the first one; Demon Deathchase (which Bloodlust was based on); the one where D gets split into two different people (Twin Shadowed Knight at a guess); and the one where a powerful vampire resurrects a bunch of infamous vampires to create a gauntlet for D to get through (Dark Road?). Most of them were pretty good though. Raiser of Gales and Stuff of Dreams were the only ones I didn't like very much.

We have outlived /a/
>>
>>25195153
You guys did. I'm going to host the threads on /a/ but a poster who called me a fag pointed out that /lit/ would be better for letting the threads last longer. I'm going to try it on /a/ (because they won the strawpoll) but if the threads do die too quickly or if I'm forced to constantly bump my own threads I'll move it here.

Uhh, no hard feelings over this image with this file name I posted on the /a/ thread, r-right guys?
>>
>>25195390
Wouldn't it be better to post on both for the first volume? There you will see which community do you like more and you'll be able to decide from your own experience
>>
>>25195565
I thought about that, but realistically I got maybe 20 people MAX who's committed to doing this with me. Spreading us between two threads wouldn't help either of them. We'll just see how it goes.
>>

Neat! Godspeed, anon!
