I almost want to check out one of Joyce’s novels but after having read his fetid fart letters many years ago (34 now) I just don’t know if I can take what he says seriously. Any advice to get over this blockage? Maybe he didn’t really write them - was it a smear? Yes that very well could be it, maybe he never really loved farts at all.
>>25192786What’s the problem? What does taking a book “seriously” mean? If you’re reading Portrait of the Artist, does something about the words on the page change?
>>25192786everyone who has lived a full life has done something that, if you knew about it, you "couldn't take seriously" by the same standardget real or get lost
>>25192806smartest guy I ever knew was a corporate defense lawyer. Died at age 53 while crossdressing and shoving meth up his ass. Left behind a wife and 3 children.Joyce is small beans compared to what some people get up to
>>25192810>crossdressingmaybe he was just reenacting that one scene from chapter 15
>>25192786god forgive a man gets horny for his girl. go fuck yourself op
>>25192786what kind of a fucking retarded question and thread is thisjust start reading the fucking book, and if you don't like it, you don't like itundisciplined retard
>>25192835I had the scariest hallucinations after reading that chapter for the first time. given how schizo it is. I was sleep deprived when I read it and am already a bit of a neurotic fuck.
>>25192856you probably understood it a lot better than I did
>>25192800While acknowledging it’s essentially an egoic block against “separating art from artist”, my perception of the words change based on how I feel about the author- knowing that he’s an extreme fart aficionado and who knows what else, does make it difficult to remove that entirely and consistently from my consciousness while reading his words.>>25192806While that’s true to an extent, not everyone has gone to such lengths of debauchery. Genuinely asking as you seem to be a Joyce reader, how does his fart obsession factor into his works, if at all?
>>25192870>my perception of the words change based on how I feel about the authormental illness. maybe disney and anime are more your speed
>>25192786Turn 25-30 and get a frontal lobe, maybe then you can approach books without such bizarre, pitiable baggage and arbitrary grievances.
>>25192810On one hand not everyone is an incredible degenerate, on the other I wonder what the correlation is between well-known writers and extreme degeneracy
>>25192870>how does his fart obsession factor into his works, if at all?NTA but they don’t really, at least not often, Ulysses had a few instances of it, in the Nighttown chapter which is already a very concupiscent, psychosexual part. And the final chapter in which a woman farts in her bed. This is at least when I gather there’s a horny element to it. You’re a bit of an insular moron though if that filters you and you’re not really proving anyone here wrong with your posts.>>25192865It messes with your perception of time, which is what the chapter itself does. That whole sequence with Bello lasts mere seconds, yet it feels like an entire short story lasting thirty pages. It’s obviously succeeded by others but that’s the longest one I believe. There’s also the the whole mayor bloom segment before reaching the brothel that lasts a while, taking place in the middle of a sentence spoken by a prostitute in which just a mere couple words invoked that sequence. Anyway, my point is, once you pin down the timeframe of everything in the chronology it becomes more “lucid” and experiencing that myself helped for better or worse.
>>25192886If he hasn’t turned 25 yet, then he’ll never be able to see past any of his qualms. The younger generations are put off by literally anything due to reasons extraneous to the thing they’re put off about.
>>25192878I don’t like either, and you haven’t offered solutions to get over Joyce’s fart fetish. I assume you have, so how’d you do it?>>25192886Not so much grievance but general disgust of such things. How did he end up longing for farts so much? Maybe if I understood his pathologies it would make things easier.
>>25192944You’re the kind of person who won’t read someone’s work because they put you off in a way that has very little to do with one’s literary merit. Why is it worth contending with this stupidity? Tell me, give me a good answer.
>>25192810Did he by any chance rape children on isolated private Caribbean islands owned by shady Jewish billionaires?
>>25192786Portrait is good. Ulysses and Finnegans Wake aren't a good intro.
>>25192944>how’d you do iti was born in a womb with sufficient prenatal testosterone, hope this helps
>>25192810Still less degenerate than brapfags
>>25192944my god you want to sound smart so bad
>>25192992So Joyce’s fart obsession doesn’t bother you?>>25192998How did that help you appreciate the expressions of a fart lover?
Which authors do you like? Who’s your favourite?
>>25192810It‘s almost like there‘s an aesthetic factor commonly shorthanded as "soul" which Joyce and your gay friend lack and which no amount of intelligence can ever redeem.
retards like you who can't separate the artist from his work deserve to be banned from art and philosophy, you are too immature to enjoy good work
>>25193489You’re in denial about the works you like so much being entirely written through the lens of a fart lover.
>>25194229Farts and poop are the lens through which all life is secretly viewed through. The fetishists exist on a higher stage of awareness of their mortality, for they know that all life is powered by killing and digestion, and that they too will die and be and be digested by worms.t. Ernest Becker
>>25194229You’d hate Rabelais and Mozart too.
>>25192903Why and how did he become obsessed with farts?
>>25194268Eproctophilia is a fetish belonging to the intelligentsia
>>25192903Why do you fans have such projective cognitive dissonance about your favorite author being utterly degenerate in mind and spirit? No need to be defensive of him or his work if his degeneracy doesn’t bother you, it comes off as being insecure. Maybe some deviants themselves feel good when famous people are also corrupted, it makes them feel safe and validated.
>>25194268I liked the theory I saw around here where someone said towards the beginning of his autobiographical Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man he alludes to falling into a shit-filled cistern that made him severely sick. And that possibly led to his fixation with poop and farts.
>>25194239>>25194291Do you genuinely believe this?
>>25194306That would make a lot of sense and does help me empathize with his fart fixation. Although it could be a very convenient story to explain it away. If true, I understand how a man can fall so low.
>>25192870>how does his fart obsession factor into his works, if at all?nta but not at all. if anything, it humanizes him. he was freaky and he obviously loved it. good for him.
>>25192944>you haven’t offered solutions to get over Joyce’s fart fetish.there's nothing "to get over" that's what everyone is trying to tell you. the man liked farts. I assume you like fucking in the dark in the missionary position, and if you wrote a book, that wouldn't bother me either.
>>25194319It’s a bit more than just “liking farts” - he was sexually obsessed over farts, and probably a lot more. If we know about the farts then what else is there? How much more degenerate was he than just being an extreme flatulence and probably poop enjoyer? Knowing how important to him farts were, one of the most important things to him in his life, his works are inherently written through that worldview. Finally, if Joyce was truly authentic, he would have openly talked about his extreme fart fetishes and wouldn’t have been worried about how it’s perceived, how his image/status would be affected, what people would think of him or his works if they found out. He would have simply been honest about such a vital and central part of his life.
>>25195316>if Joyce was truly authentic, he would have openly talked about his extreme fart fetishes and wouldn’t have been worried about how it’s perceived,so you're retarded, then. you think a person can't be authentic, just because they exercise their right to privacy?
>>25196116Loving farts is his worldview, totally central to his life, yet he chooses not to express that publicly because he’s ashamed and afraid, or worse. It’s not about privacy, just honesty about what matters most to him in life, which is farts and poop. He’s inauthentic, otherwise he would just be honest about his fart-driven personal experience and worldview. Don’t excuse dishonesty just because the alternative (being honest) would mean even more shame and disrespect for him
