>>
Lolita

>>
>>25193547
Quo Vadis. It sucks, Sienkiewicz is a hack, but I wanted to read him to prepare for Parnicki's Tylko Beatrycze
>>
>>25193547
non-fiction:Is God Happy?, Leszek Kolakowski.
fiction: Probably Diary of a Madman from Gogol.

A book containing the field reports of a Russo-Ukrainian psychiatrist who studied possessions in the beginning of the 20th century. In the introduction he attributes possessions to autosuggestion, however in one part of the book he describes a blind test in which the subject is able to distinguish holy water from normal water, and in another he tests them, under hypnosis, for clairvoyance that they, according to popular belief, uh, possess. Not only does he claim that they were able to locate hidden items without the use of eyesight, he also states nonchalantly that he was able to control their movements through sheer force of mind. He explains the power of clairvoyance through passive mind-reading, which is attributed to some sort of electromagnetic-esque resonance (ah, makes sense now!). Fun book, activated my almonds.

master and margarita, i liked it a lot.

>simple, even simplistic prose
>the characters are anything but realistic
>anachronisms like "rycerz" annoy me
Reading Sienkiewicz right after Schulz and Dukaj feels like going from Melville to Harry Potter. And while I dislike Tolstoy, at least his characters feel somewhat realistic, while Sienkiewicz's characters feel like puppets used to push his moral.

Going through Majakovskij. Each year I read one poetry collection in russian so as not to forget it. This year fucking sucks though. Good thing it's short.
I'm eyeing Zbigniew Herbert's Still Life with Bridle at my library, but only because I find his surname quite hilarious. Anyone here has read it? Is it good?
>>
>>25193807
I like him.

Lasy płonęły –
a oni
na szyjach splatali ręce
jak bukiety róż

ludzie zbiegali do schronów –
on mówił że żona ma włosy
w których się można ukryć

okryci jednym kocem
szeptali słowa bezwstydne
litanię zakochanych

Gdy było bardzo źle
skakali w oczy naprzeciw
i zamykali je mocno

tak mocno że nie poczuli ognia
który dochodził do rzęs

do końca byli mężni
do końca byli wierni
do końca byli podobni
jak dwie krople
zatrzymane na skraju twarzy

Roadside picnic. If you've every played or watched Stalker (the Ukrainian game), it's the novel Stalker is based off.

I have a Russian copy of War and Peace, and I've been trying to read it. I spent a bit of time learning Russian, but I'm nowhere near good enough yet. Still, though, it's something to aim for!

Buddha's Little Finger by Victor Pelevin. One of the top 5 books I've ever read. Fantastic mix of buddhism, humour, and madness

>>
>>25193977
Dostoevsky IS video games and anime.
>>

Me too, every day I lament not being stupid enough to make any money in this life. Of course, it's bad for the soul to speak ill of a beautiful woman.
>>
>>25193547
does dasha knows she'll look and smell like an ashtray if she keeps smoking, and what that happens, no one will want to work with her?
>>
>>25193547
Khlebnikov, Zangezi
>>
>>25193977
Idk I really liked the dream of a ridiculous man. Probably my favourite book, so you might be right.
>>
>>25193930
Honestly, if I didn't enjoy the book after 100 soporific pages about life in orthodox russia of a funky family, I fail to see why I should continue. After reading the dream of a ridiculous man I was expecting something spiritual and interesting but nope it's just the basic descriptive novel style interlaced with dialogs. So yes if you tell me it's getting good after that I might give it another shot.
>>
>>25193763
she sounds like a twat
>>
>>25194203
I don't know how you picked up a 1,000 page book titled Brothers Karamazov not expecting exposition of the family dynamics the book is obviously going to be structured around. Have you ever read a book of this length before?
>>
>>25194275
I get what you are saying but that doesn't really answer my question, does it get better ? Or if I didn't like the style for the first 100 pages I won't like the rest ? I don't have infinite time so I just gave up (maybe too quickly). Of course you need some sort of set up but man I'm falling asleep
>>
>>25194303
Yes, it 'gets better'. It's a classic for a reason.
It has a very slow start, but it deals extensively with themes of morality, God, faith, freedom, guilt, etc. like basically everything else Dostoyevsky wrote. And like everything else Dostoyevsky wrote, it's themes are primarily communicated through the lives of its characters and their radically contrasting perspectives on life. Everything that occurs in the novel unfolds from how the brothers are characterised in the earlier parts of the novel, so it's not without its purpose.
You should read until at least the grand inquisitor chapter. If you're still not interested at that point, then drop it and read C&P or something

Depending on your definition of eastern Europe:

I've read a couple of books from the region, but I especially liked:

Dictionary of the Khazars by Milorad Pavić
Cyclops by Ranko Marinković
The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk
