Is he unironically worth reading? Like, can you sit down and say "I'm gonna study the works of Stephen King" like you would those of Homer or Shakespeare? Is he one guy to look in 300 years and think: "That was one of the greatest minds of that generation"? Should you invest time on reading King?
>>25195070yes
>>25195070>Is he unironically worth reading? Sure>Like, can you sit down and say "I'm gonna study the works of Stephen King" like you would those of Homer or Shakespeare? No >Is he one guy to look in 300 years and think: "That was one of the greatest minds of that generation"? No. And if this is how you decide what to read, you don't like reading. If you're trying to maximize your reading ROI, you don't like reading. >Should you invest time on reading King?If you want to
>>25195070>Is he one guy to look in 300 years and think: "That was one of the greatest minds of that generation"?no. matt groenig and scott adams. the industry ensured that nothing worth reading could be published
> Like, can you sit down and say "I'm gonna study the works of Stephen King" like you would those of Homer or Shakespeare?Doing that for any writer is gay incel behavior. You can read a book and reread it if you want but if you sit around and analyze you are trying too hard and no longer have a right to call yourself a human.
He writes airport literature. Plot, plot, plot. Shock, scandal, scary. No themes, no subtext, no profound insights.
>>25195403So did Dosto.
money reading isn't a hard call to make
Anything he wrote past his car crash is complete slop.>>25195403Not true for Pet Semetary.
>>25195403Even King himself admits he is a good storyteller but not a good writer. Still, Salem's Lot hits hard. His best work was from back when he was an alcoholic on coke.
>>25195403>no profound insightsThis is literally every western fiction author since Goethe died
>>25195070King has more influential work and more of his work has been adapted in 50 years than anything like Homer, so yes, he's way more important
>>25195403His books have themes. What a weird criticism.
>>25195070he's like the beatles of books, probably an industry plant like them too with all his progressive injections
I'm on dark tower 4 and I'm enjoying it but I'm not much of a reader. I loved the 2nd book and the world he's created is nothing like anything I've seen. I just really can't be bothered for a 1000 page banger like IT or under the dome and I've seen all the movies so I rather invest in reading something new. Some of his short stories are good, especially the 1408 story.
>>25196342lmao
>>25195403'tis what sells
>>25196494Except the Beatles sometimes had good songs.
>>25196662cap
>>25195403>No themes, no subtext, no profound insights.thats not what makes a great work. originality of language and structure, actualization with detail, complexity of characters etc are.
>>25195070he's just a bit of fun. He's like the American houellebecq. Something you would read on a plane or a bus.
>>25196494The Beatles innovated like crazy while having an unmatched discography. If you don't like at least 5 of their songs, you don't like music.
>>25195070I just finished 11/22/63 the other day and loved it. His books aren't high literature or anything but they're entertaining and well written. I don't think he'll be in the same conversation as Shakespeare or Homer. More like Mark Twain.
>>25195087>>25195070You can study it as a way to make easy money by writing slop
Dark Tower good
Pet Semetery is his most literary work.
>>25196867The Beatles fucking suck(Harrison was the only one with any claim to innovation or passion which is why they shafted him to make room for a billion more goofy weed songs and performatively trite ballads.)
>>25197067I'm going to fucking suck your dick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>25197070Thanks!
>>25195399>if you sit around and analyze you are trying too hard and no longer have a right to call yourself a humanwhat happened in the latter half of the 20th century is people got like that with tolkien, or star trek. tolkien was consciously trying to be an english vergil, but the great english language poems had already been written with paradise lost and the canterbury tales. star trek was faggotry promoted by kikes as an attack on western civilization, both lead actors were jews, and so the jew kissed the negress on screen to scandalize the audience. instead of getting escapist fantasies from reading the Bible and trying to act like theyre Bible characters, the english speaking nerds became half elf rangers and startfleet officers, then figured that their sexual behavior shouldnt be limited by patriarchial marriage norms
>>25195070>In the epilogue, Kevin gets a computer for his following birthday. In order to test its word processor function, he types "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Rather than a printout of this text, the page reads, "The dog is loose again. It is not sleeping. It is not lazy. It's coming for you, Kevin. It's very hungry. And it's VERY angry."
>>25195070I've heard of authors being undermined by their own success, but in the case of King it's almost as he's drowning his own signal with his own noise. He'd undeniably a great author that has influenced thousands and will be remembered forever. But he's written way too much. He's put out 1-2 books a year, every single year, for over 50 years. That's too many books. There's a lot of gold but so much shit. Any recommendation of him has to come with a dozen caveats and what to read vs. what to skip as if he's a long running anime. So, well worth reading and getting to know the mind of, but it requires more work than it should.
Fairy Tale is the best work he has written in years.
>>25196861>originality of language and structurejoyce cultist spotted
>>25197247Eat dick, most of his books are crap.
Reminder that for every Stephen King book, someone already wrote a better version of It, see:>Burnt Offerings > The Shining>Stinger > Under the Dome>Swan's Song > The Stand>Ghost Story > Salem's Lot>Floating Dragon > It>Hell Hound > Cujo>Jerusalem Man series > Dark Tower series
>>25196861ok cool i agree, but what does any of this have to do with king
>>25195425Dosto wears off when you realize he relies too hard on certain suspense-building tricks. Not to mention Bely did suspense way better as far as Russians go.
>>25197067Harrison was shafted indeed. If you know even a little theory, you know how hard it is to do something different while having it sound catchy and inevitable, which is what they all excelled at. People who say The Beatles suck either haven't checked out their full catalogue to realize there is something in that diversity for them as well, or they say it with caveats that grow more inclusive if you push them. Like, Tomorrow Never Knows... surely? A day in the Life... etc.
>>25197392he is airport lit, i just wanted to agree on the reasons. generalities and life lessons don't make great art.
>>25197388>Floating Dragon > ItI thought it was Summer of Night>>25197067If you tell me what you think are the best bands, I promise I won't argue, and will take it as a recommendation.
>>25197465Suck, suck, they innovated at sucking.
/lit/ has zero business having opinions on music. Music is the highest form of Art and literature doesn't even crack the top three.
>>25195070he's good
