Of course you don't need a million dollars, a monthly passive income of above average wages would be enough, but that's something not a lot of people have. And most who do, as you said, might just end up with a hedonistic lifestyle. In addition to having comfortable lifestyle you also need the right personality, it's a game of numbers which is why there aren't Dante's and Da Vinci's popping up every day even though there's plenty of rich people children.
