>>25197479I just don't see how they wouldn't end up being mages of some sort. Even if you give them their own "internal energy" they would still end up being similar to mages in some sense. Perhaps as the other guy mentioned: the way they use mana differs, therefore it's not that warriors "cast punch" but their punch carries mana with it.>>25197458Yeah that sounds about right. It's just a different application of magic. Then again, maybe those two aren't that similar after all. Radio waves, microwaves (and their ovens), gamma radiation, and visible light are all "electromagnetic radiation" but they're also quite different things in the real world.>>25197595Things don't work that way. Nobody gets to decide what has "artistic merit" and what doesn't. In the long-term it's a question of what survives. Popular stories are far more likely to survive, therefore they will automatically have "artistic merit". High brow literature isn't any more valuable than genre fics are. Snobbish people just pretend that's the case and nobody cares enough to tell them their current-popular-idea allegory is boring.
>>25197697okay thanks anon
>>25197342Go check out Arcane Exfil, it might scratch this itch.>slop report>Beware of Chicken v7 c46Fun chapter. I enjoy the meme of "cultivators do regular thing, but extreme." Reminds me of the drinking game scene from Sky Pride (several volumes ago), where a bunch of drunk cultivators are abusing their superhuman speed and reflexes to cheat at drinking games, while also playing high speed martial arts footsies under the table.>Sky Pride v6 c23Bit of an exposition chapter, but we gotta get the new cultivation art at some point and now is as good a time as ever.>Max Level Archmage c139Vivi picks her nose while the Archbishop heals a kid. Snore. I could do without the narration reminding me every third paragraph how hardcore and godly the dude is.>Archmage Coefficient c34Lesbians. Can't help but see the guy from The Good Doctor in my mind's eye through half these dialogue exchanges. Sometimes I'd like more wizarding and less autism, but I understand that it's settling into a School Fantasy rhythm which usually means more talking and less wizarding.>William Oh c259I love the stupid debuff sickle. It's such a fun item. I'd put it in a D&D campaign or something.>Saintess Summons Skeletons c850I didn't like the city building hook when it first arrived and then we fucked off on an adventure for a while. It's a little better now. I like the worldbuilding as vague as it is sometimes, because it strikes that balance of there being threats for low level characters but also a broad cast of high level assholes who just couldn't be bothered to clear out every rat infestation. Gotta leave some stuff for the lowbies.>Stray Cat Strut v9 c21RavensDagger tends to annoy me for not enough happening in any given chapter. Maybe that's due to the author juggling twenty stories or something. That trend continues here, but at least we finally got to the bottom of the situation in Montreal.>Re:Deity v4 c16For the "grand finale" it rushes through the actual fun bit. Too many characters, as usual, most of whom are irrelevant or boring. Not enough time is spent to really appreciate the trap or the reveal of the boss monster, so the fight feels like it ends before it really gets started. Maybe its my fault for speed reading this story sometimes but man there's so little at this point that actually makes me want to slow down and smell the roses here.
>>25197705damn i thought you were listing off the specific chapters of immersive gunfight scenes off the dome lol
>>25197698>High brow literature isn't any more valuable than genre fics are. Snobbish people just pretend that's the case and nobody cares enough to tell them their current-popular-idea allegory is boring.I read a lot of slop, write it myself, and have way more fun with it than literature, but not a single web novel has remotely made me sit back and think about the human condition in the way various literature has.
>>25197705I thought you dropped MLA
>>25197698uncritical and stupidthere's a lot more to the merit of a story than whether or not it's popular, and those merits can be present in slop as wellmany great novelists were sloppers of their timesnot to say that webnovels should strive to be literary or anything but you're taking the reductionism too far
>>25197708My autism isn't quite that powerful, sorry to disappoint. >>25197717It's in a low point at the moment but not drop worthy at the moment. Re:Deity, Draka, and Chronicles of an Isekai'd Legion are on the cut list at the moment. The latter two I'm already not up to date on, which is usually a bad sign for my continued engagement.
>>25197726I could swear I remember the weekly review anon talking about dropping MLAAre there two of you?
>>25197758Probably? I've only been reading these threads for like a week now, in a bit of a gush phase since I don't have anywhere else to talk about the silly web stories. I posted my (too long) follow list here >>25193133.
>>25197770Oh yeah then, this was a while ago
>>25197718I didn't say that it's all about popularity, but rather that popularity makes it more likely that a story survives.>>25197710Why not? It's not like traditional literature is all that more insightful about what humans are truly like. They're not written by people who are experts in some field that factually knows what humans are like. All the oddities you see in web novels are about as true as your average traditional novel when it comes to the human condition. Take Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. People talk about it as though it's some incredible insight into the human mind, but it isn't. It's just fiction. If you look into how criminals behave then Raskolnikov's behavior is unusual. Regular people commit horrific crimes and rarely seem to get eaten up by it.
>>25197779Which web novels compare to Dostoevsky to you?
>>25197688The chapter I wrote today came out boring, too. I've got too much set up to get through. I think I'm going to add some b-plot padding to keep things interesting while the MC progresses his preparations.I want to just summarize it but it doesn't quite fit the pacing to do so even though current events are kind of dragging. I dunno I might just rewrite the entire thing tomorrow.
>>25197779That's because the novel form of literature is kinda shit for showing how people really are. You want to read ancient Greek plays and epic poems. That'll tell you how people really are.
>>25197779crime and punishment is both a thriller and insightful to the particulars of people's experiences and thought processes. raskolinokov isn't supposed to be a realistic depiction of a statistically average killer. I've met, known, and to lesser or greater extents, been raskolinikov, marmelidov, and svidrigailovof all the entertaining novels you could've used as evidence of the form lacking insight, this is probably the worst
I'm gonna introduce a high fashion arc in my esoteric doomsdays wizards novel and I don't give a shit.
>>25197885if its not as good as princess jelly fish I shall self edit
>>25197885i would probably skim it but having the soul to give your web novel personal flair makes it endearing to your readers even if they don't like the current arc. readers can sniff out generic soulless sloppa
Would you read this story>Incredibly ugly incel gets summoned as a hero>Beats the demon king after being promised the princess's hand in marriage>Princess immediately commits suicide because of how horrific he is>The kingdom tries to find him alternate wives, but they all reject him.Plot arcs would include:>His fiancee trying to poison him on his wedding day>His wife sobbing uncontrollably on the marital bed and lamenting being married to a monstrosity>A gold digger who's just in it for the cash and status, who leads him on but never lets him do the deed>The kingdom starts using him to clear up red light districts because his mere presence causes brothels to close up shop
>>25197962no
>>25197962who does this even appeal to? what part of this story is supposed to be fun?
>>25197962I'd be more horrified if you managed to actually write this drivel.
>>25197962>japanese humor
>>25197962misogyny fueled hateslop would be hardly anything new but I don't really see the narrative appeal hereis it just a rumination on suffering or what?
>>25197966It's supposed to be funny, a guy who is the saviour of the world can't even get laidIt's also a deconstruction of the trope of a loser getting isekaid and having women fawn all over him for no reason
>>25197980You can't deconstruct something just for the end result to be the spiritual equivalent of reality.
>>25197980>Deconstruction Midwitslop
>>25197980Well it's not funny so you may want to shelve the idea
>>25197962The problem with this is you're too focused on le funny rejection scenes and not enough on the MC and his desires and how he acts to achieve them. He has barely any motivation and you've just put him in a position to suffer meaninglessly.Give him a child and make him a single parent and he wants a wife not just for his own happiness but because he believes his child needs/deserves a mother figure, and then all that stuff happens, and it's WAY more compelling. Maybe the kid is adopted or some shit, or the kid got accidentally isekai'd with him so he feels responsible. Now all the commentary about how he's ugly and incel has emotional weight, and the shallowness of the women comes through. Make it even more meaningful by having the women agree to it BEFORE he kills the demon king, and then AFTER when they need to fulfill their end of the bargain, they try and renege.
>>25197980>deconstructionunless you have examinations to make about the underlying principals or values or what have you then it's not a deconstruction, it's just satirizing >having women fawn all over him for no reasonI was reading an isekai set up where OP MC normal guy-man gets summoned by the demon queen because the forces of humanity were summoning typical isekai protagonists who were all sex pest murderhobos and it was fucking up the whole worldnot really my thing so I dropped it but I suspect what you're going for has already been done in a more interesting (and fun) way
>>25197980I was talking about this earlier, actually, where some anons think because they can make a greentext about their premise that it's a good premiseYou could maybe make a short story (2-5k words) that takes the piss out of this idea. It's a punchline premise and it has the same longevity as a joke: set it up, knock it down, and then your whole story is overCompletely unfitting for a proper web novel
>>25197994as if 90% of webnovels aren't a hooky premise stretched into a serial
>>25197980>It's supposed to be funny, a guy who is the saviour of the world can't even get laidMisogyny alone isn't that funny. You gotta have a joke beyond>wimmen shallow and bad, amiritegaiz? Is his isekai cheat power based off his collection of SSR Pepes or something? Also at some point you're just straddling the setups of Shield Hero and Redo of Healer, which is certainly an authorial path to take.
>>25197998>Also at some point you're just straddling the setups of Shield Hero and Redo of Healer, which is certainly an authorial path to take.Shield Hero and Redo are revenge fantasies which actually has a path toward a larger narrative. Anon's greentext was just misery suffering with no payoff.
>>25197996Sure, but if anon is seeking advice on whether his idea works he needs to give an idea about where it stretches to rather than just the premise. Silly premises are very easy to make, it's how to extend them into a multiple book series
>>25197996Also I kinda of just took you at face value but I think it's more like 30% are hooky premises, most actually popular series have clear narrative engines or are fairly generic setups
We talking deconstruction?Let's do deconstruction.System Progression fantasy.Goal?Make a pencil.Yes I stole it from Friedman sue me
