Thoughts on AtD? Along with Vineland, it seems to be his most overlooked novel.
>>25197745It made me wonder whether he was privy to secret government energy projects. Sometimes I wonder if this book was really an attempt to show how technology is hidden from us by a small cadre of elites who secretly run and monopolize the world.
>>25197754That's kinda what happened with teslas wireless energy, no?
>>25197745It is my favorite, absolutely love it's structure and has his best characters with a nice balance between the Pynchonian characters and more traditional empathetic characters that play off of each other wonderfully and the bulk of the recuring characters get an ending, they are not just left where ever they happen to be when they cease being useful.
>>25197764Not sure. It seems like conventional wisdom is that it’s all conspiracy theories. I can’t tell whether he’s kind of mocking those or showing that truth is stranger than fiction.
>>25197862It's not mockery or showing that truth is stranger than fiction, it is a piece of history he uses as a jumping off point and something to blur the line between fiction and the reality.
>>25197745is this better than vineland and bleeding edge? I was not a fan of bleeding edge
>can't get the 'yukyukyuk' out of my head
>>25197873Vineland and BE are weird and outliers in his work. Most everyone find AtD better than BE and Vineland.

>>25197745Stay on reddit and stop shilling this hack here
>>25198098pynch is never leaving /lit/
>>25197745The most overlooked of his works would be Shadow Ticket, which seemed to release to no fanfare.
>>25198098his shitpost broke the pulitzer for literature that year, he's a made man
>>25198190He's already been kicked out
>>25198098/pol/ faggots have infested this board, who read nothing but constantly preach about illiad and odyssey
>>25198394As opposed to anons like you who take the bait and preach about how retarded /pol/ is? Got anything to say about AtD? Even if you have not read it you could ask questions and contribute to the topic.

>>25197745My granddad loves this book.
>>25198604That doesn't make sense, I passed no judgement on /pol/ nor did I make any political statements. Admittedly my subtext was that that anon who called /pol/ retarded was just as retarded as /pol/, but your response strongly suggests subtext is lost on you, so it doesn't make sense. >>25198635Your grandpa sounds great, you should tell him to come here so I can have someone to talk about AtD with.
>>25197745I fucking love this era brehs
>>25197745Just started this recently, about 300 pages in, it's immensely fun and constantly engaging in multiple ways. This is my first Pynchon and right from the go I could tell why his writing appeals so much to people. The weird pseuo-science stuff is interesting albeit confusing, not sure what to make of it yet. Also I'm not sure how literal to take certain wacky events and how they fit into the internal continuity of the text, for instance the stuff with the Vormance expedition and the Chums of Chance (also the fact they randomly seem to age?) encountering the thing in the ice that destroys the city, is that an alternate timeline?
>>25199251lol, that first read is very confusing, especially the first few hundred pages where he is establishing the various pastiches. You are just getting into where the style settles down and he lets the pastiches be mostly implicit, things get easier to follow. Things will pull together and start making sense but unless you are very good at taking notes, you will need a second read, second read is even better than the first. Audiobook is not a bad choice for the second read and you get to hear the Lovecraft pastiche read aloud, it is amazing to hear. Now I want to reread it, I miss the Rideouts and the Traverses.
>>25199930>I miss the Rideouts and the Traverses.Did you know the Traverses show up in Vineland? I think you'll enjoy that if you havent read it yet
>>25199955Yeah, but in name only. I have one or two chapters left in my reread of Vineland, it is considerably better than I remember and interesting but thematically it has long since played out and is kind of repetitive (supposed to be) and I just don't really care about story itself enough to finish it. I was really into it and on that last reading I decided to save that last bit for the next day, all interest was gone by the next day. Eventually I will probably finish it, maybe this weekend.
>>25199972The last section of Vineland is too cozy and heartwarming to leave unread. It's a lovely payoff for the scatterbrained sections that came before it. Its like everything settles down and comes back to earth.
>>25200788>rereadI already know what happens. The more I think about the ending the more I hate it, same with the book, The whole commentary on pop culture through pastiche of pop culture results in a thin satire, has a few interesting bits but mostly eh. I was liking it before I started writing this post, deleted my post 5 or 6 times because by the time I reached the end my opinion had changed and now I think I hate it.
