i always give the translator's preface a shot. when i read the saga of the volsungs, it told me about "kennings", poetical conviences such as "whale road" for current, and when i read "altered states" the translator's preface explained the title was originally "rausch", more directly translated as intoxications, but junger felt that this would be too suggestive of poison and insisted the word not be used. they aren't all winners but they are the only thing before page one i read.
