What Freud is still worth reading? I assume a lot has been discredited by now, but surely some is still relevant
I've been trying to get into Freud recently and I'm convinced that a lot of what he said had some sort of merit. Parapraxes (Freudian slips) are really interesting to read about and I think his idea of the conflict of will which explains it is absolutely correct. Dream interpretation... I don't know, some of it isn't lunacy, but when he gives the enormous list of all the things that represent penises, and how a square house represents a man and house with voluptuous balconies represents a woman, and all that sort of stuff, you can't help but laugh. The idea of the Super-Ego I also like a lot, that essentially your surroundings constitute a part of your psyche is interesting. Freud is more influential today than I think people are willing to admit, the concept of childhood trauma as an explanation for problems in an adult definitely originated in Freud, and people typically use that idea to explain virtually everything nowadays. The book you posted is definitely worth a read, I enjoyed it a lot, some utterly bizarre and definitely false stuff in there, like the primal father stuff, but definitely a good book. I would definitely recommend either 'Psychopathology of Everyday Life' or just the Parapraxis chapters from the 'Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis.' They're pretty much identical I think, but Parapraxes are the only part of Freud's theory which really has compelled me so far.
>>25201117It's more accurate than modern psychological analysis, because the psych community has been seized by political ideologues to push their agenda. Being a faggot is a mental disorder, I don't care how many clinicians say otherwise.
>>25201117>Nooooo you can't prove it 100% scientifically because there's always someone barely-human that is an exception to the rule!! Thus your whole theory is false! This is how discrediters think. There are not complete truths, nor complete lies. You can learn about yourself and the world with Freud. You will acquire great insight.
>>25201332Thanks, this was what I wanted to know. I just found an online store with a bunch of Freud going for $1-2 a piece and made an order (picrel). I've read a bit of Jung and his dream interpretation stuff can be a little questionable too so I'm not too worried about being put off by any of that
>>25201117Moses and Monotheism. He was murdered shortly after publication.
>>25201438>murderedhe OD'ed on heroin because he was a degenerate jewish pervert
Read David Bakan and similar authors who show Freud, Husserl, etc were just pushing a secular version of their jewish filthI don't need an oriental framework, fuck Abraham I have ACHILLES
>>25201117Freud's ideas are cool and interesting. It's all based on Nietzsche. If you've read Nietzsche it'll be intuitive. The "Frued is disproven" thing isn't exactly true. It's true that psychoanalysis cannot offer hard data, but it's also true that Freud's ideas made Americans uncomfortable. Freud contradicts deep seeded American sensibilities and values. Read Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex and you'll realize why. You'll notice that Jung is still admired in America despite him believing in magic and insane shit like the collective unconscious which can never be proven. Jung is more accepted primarily because he did not believe that sexuality was the beating heart of the psychic economy (libido) and thus did not contradict dominant Protestant theology. This was further made difficult by Freud himself who hated Americans and considered even Americam psychoanalysts to be religious dolts. And of course there was prejuduce against Freud because he was Jewish. Even besides the sexual aspects, if you had to take care of your schizophrenic adult child in 1982, you'd also probably hate the professional who told you that your son is like that because of how you raised him. The idea that your son's brain is fundamentally genetically broken is much more comforting. There was a war in American Academia between psychoanalysts and more CBT oriented practitioner and the CBT neuroscience guys won out because of they were backed by consumers and pharmaceutical companies (not to say anything involving pharma companies makes somethings immediately "wrong"). Whether conditioning, antipsychotics, and brain scans are more beneficial than talk therapy I'll leave for you to decide. Freud is still popular in France and South America. The most important idea from Freud is the divided psyche. It's his best observation, and his dealings with patients' subconscious self sabotage is fascinating. Read Psychopathology of Everyday Life for this, but it's in everything he wrote. It should be noted that modern analysts reject the clean partitions (Ego, Id, Superego) but still agree that the psyche is divided into many often hidden drives.Even sketchy, old, overly speculative Freud is worth reading (Civilized and it's Discontents). Even when Freud is wrong, he's generalky pointing towards the right direction. Translations are all bad, but I've heard good things about the recent Penguin translations though I haven't read them myself. The Interpretation of Dreams will get you hooked. The Ego and the Id and the joke book are top of the list. If you read Freud before Jung you will hate Jung. Especially if you read about how Jung treated his patients (rape). If you read Jung before Freud you'll haye Freud. Simple as. That's basically it good luck anon I'm going to wipe my ass now.
>>25201117Everything that is valuable in Freud has been stolen from Nietzsche, and everything else is worthless.
>>25201846Thanks anon>Jung is more accepted primarily because he did not believe that sexuality was the beating heart of the psychic economy (libido)Yeah I've been getting into reading Jung recently too and his writing about that disagreement is what made me interested in reading Freud. I don't think I'm personally very sexually motivated but it's hard to not believe that's what's at the heart of most people's thoughts and desires.
>>25201961The libido theory is very much supported biologically/evolutionarily, only a religious cowards could have a problem with that. With that said, Jung is not completely useless, but you just have to keep in mind that he's not brave enough to be fully honest.
>>25201117I tried reading pic related and it was utterly boring. It felt very derivative of Nietzsche, but Nietzsche if he was shit, unprovocative, retarded, boring etc.
