>decided to read Faust because WHY NOT?>get a used copy from the internet>it's a translation to my language from the mid of the 19 century>about 500 pages, perfect for a month of calm reading>realize the book is actually a play>uhhhhh, oh well, how hard can it be>read the first part. A little bit hard, but mannage to understand what is happening, books get very intense as Gretchen mother die because of Faust and then his brother is killed by Faust and then Gretchen kill her own baby while Faust is watching witches ride goats fully naked (is Faust black?).>secod part of the book>can't understand fuck all>aparently Mephisto tricks the emperor in using FIAT money>book expect me to know dozens of classical greek mithological creatures>dialogs don't make sense because they are translation of poetry (my brain simple can't process poetry)>stuck on the third act without having understood much of the secondWhy is this so hard? Do they really give this book to children to read in Germany? Am I retarded?
>>25201739We never read the second part in school. I understood the first part, but still had to focus.
>>25201749>We never read the second part in school. What age?
>>2520175017 or so
>>25201739Goethe wrote part 1 when he was like 20, and part 2 when he was like 80. A lifetime of learning, writing and experimenting. Part 2 is a masterpiece, but it demands a lot from the reader. I recommend revisiting it later in life; that's what I did with Paradife Loft and Moby-Dick back when I was a retarded teen, I realised I was way out of my depth, revisited the books in my 20s and they instantly jumped into my personal top 3.If you want a Faust story, I recommend Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann. Still difficult, it explores classical music in-depth and expects you to learn the terminology, but it's way easier than Faust p2.
>>25201764>Goethe wrote part 1 when he was like 20, and part 2 when he was like 80I had no idea about this small detail. Also, is The Sorrows of Young Werther also a play, or is more like a "normal book"?
>>25201785It's a novel, written in prose (a "normal book"). I haven't read it yet, but AFAIK it should be easier than Faust. The same goes Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship.
