Now that no one talks about it anymore, is it worth reading?
>>
>>25204509
Depends on your tolerance for the not-novel portions of it. Also, if your interest comes from some 'spooky house' meme you'll be disappointed.

>is it worth reading?
Yes but his new book is better
>>
>>25204509
I read it in 2008 because /x/ constantly shilled it, it was okay
>>
>>25204509
It’s cool for what it does
>>

It’s fine, but not great. I prefer the authors he takes inspiration from, this seems like a pale imitation of DFW, Borges and Nabokov.

It's fun reading fresh. I'm sure people have cast light on all the secrets and codes, but going in blind is really for the best. If I had that much time I would read it twice more as purely Davidson and Purely Johnny to see what it does to my understanding of it.
>>
>>25204509
It's a lot of fun, so I'd say yes.
>>
>>25204509
I read it on a flight while nauseous. It really added to the immersion.
>>
>>25204509
It's fun, but if you are familiar with SCP or backrooms it kinda ruins it. I kept imagining "Kanna flossing in the backrooms" through all of it and the house was no longer scary.
>>
>>25204509
No it's gimmicky and lame and the bad parts make the better ones still not worthwhile
>>
>>25204509
It's cool Johnny's parts can feel pretty hit or miss near the middle but it's alright. I didn't really have the patience for the end letters though.
My favorite bit is everything about the Minotaur, clever idea
>>
I respect the Johnny Truant segments without enjoying them.
>DUDE it's a book that's bigger on the inside, it's two books inside of one book LMAO
I respect that without enjoying it.
>DUDE the real horror is the horror that happens in real life, the supernatural can have a happy ending but not the natural LMAO
I respect that without enjoying it.

>new book is better
Agreed, it feels like it uses a lot of the same ideas just in a more subtle way
>>

Satanic trips.

Also how so? I own the book but have been putting off reading it because I keep seeing mixed opinions.
>>
>>25204509
I liked it and wish there was more stuff like it. Lit considers this book pure plebbitt but idgaf what lit thinks about life, love or happiness. They can get fucked for all I care. Lit is consistently wrong about just about everything anyway.
>>
>>25205702
I think it uses the same idea of the book being framed as a story being told to use and letting them comment on the story but here it's all much better integrated into the main story rather than being separated from it in the way it was in house of leaves
>>
>>25205763
Okay, that's interesting. I figured it would have more going on than just one straight forward story, especially given the length.
>>
>>25205619
This desu
>>
It's good if you go into it cognizant of the fact it's literally YA.
