How come so few are reading my books? All I want are insightful reviews and a small army of loyal fans. Is that too much to ask?

The only time I considered getting an MFA was when I found out David Lynch had one and I thought he might be the instructor but I'm pretty sure he wasn't and if he was he certainly isn't anymore.

Here's a riddle for you: What color were Dorothy's ruby slippers in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?"

ruby

Weren't they metal? I remember something about them being very sturdy and dorothy thinking that meant they would last on a long walk and me thinking how horridly uncomfortable they'd be to walk in at all. Been a few years since I read all the oz. Books but I've done it twice.
>>
>>25205095
Excellent answer. In the book, they were silver. The book is "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and the ruby slippers, which photographed better, were in the movie entitled simply "The Wizard of Oz."

Post politislop on youtube and twitter until something goes viral, then shill your books on whatever people latched onto. Then post a few "writing advice" videos (actually more politislop) and finally announce that you're making a community discord, as well as a mailing list where members will sometimes get a free ebook. You'll probably get five whole people to discuss your books in your discord by doing this.

Never read the book, how is it?

Are you very popular on the internet? Can I roleplay as an agent and see what we can do for your marketing plan?

Honestly considering going the tuber route. I have a camera and media experience. I just need some kind of formula for churning out scripts.

I am extremely unpopular on the internet. I have concepts of a marketing plan.

Add "[slash]productionblues" to the end of the goodreads.com

>>25206903
How about you just link it, you smarmy fucking cunt.

>>25206824
It's metaphorically about the gold standard, or something like that.

Wizard of Oz is just LOTR for the gays.

I shall complete assembly of the link in a fortnight. Will there be anything else, your majesty?

Just say you have no books niqqa

I remember back when I had no books. Those were dark times.

Books require nearly no overhead or barrier, meaning quite literally anyone can write one.

Unfortunately, it's one of the less popular hobbies.

Then to top it all off, the time commitment is much higher than watching a show or movie, listening to an album, even playing (some) games. Even diehard consumers with tons of free time have to be picky about what they commit their time to.

It's about as bad as it gets. That even one non-family, non-friend read your stuff is practically a miracle. Rejoice!

>This story might be an experiment in what it can make a reader sit through. Early on, we are treated to a cat being tortured and killed by three schoolgirls. Distasteful, sure, but it brings the girls closer together. We get full erotica-style prose for the orgy scene, to demonstrate our titular hero's low morals. What could be more depraved than the ostensible lesbian schoolgirl in a pitch black pileup of men? Then there are the eight pages of screaming. Not arguing or shouting. I mean open quotation mark, eight pages of letters like the author set their decaf matcha latte on the keyboard, end quote.

Oh my god
>>
>>25207135
I don't drink decaf matcha lattes fyi. I drink black coffee.

Whenever I talk to creatives on /tv/ someone says nobody's going to read our screenplays so we should write books instead. Now I come here and you're telling me nobody's reading books and that I should stick to writing for visual media.
>>
>>25207165
Dude, it's 2026, not 1926. You're competing with not only everyone who's alive, not only everyone who's ever lived, and not only artificial intelligence, but literally INFINITE distractions. You picked the wrong century to be creative. You should have been born earlier if you wanted to make things that would let you be remembered.
>>
>>25207185
This just makes me wonder how often someone said something like this a century ago. I wonder how many people told Franz Kafka that literature is a hoplessly dying medium. I wonder how frequently Kafka thought to himself that he'd never be remembered.
>>
>>25207165
What they mean is that visual media has barriers put into place to filter out 99% of the people trying to create stuff. Nobody values the ideas guy writer because there are far too many of you.

For books there is no such barrier, you could in theory put it on Amazon before the end of the day and start selling it. Will anyone read it? Well, no, but that's a different question entirely.
>>
>>25204970
Most people don't read anymore and those who do mostly read fantasy goonette trash. It's bleak.

...or it would be if I didn't compulsively write bisexual bdsm harem slop!

But joking aside I'm sorry anon, I wish people valued art more.
>>
>>25207229
How many people told lottery winners that there was no point in playing the lottery? Probably a lot.

But what conclusion can you possibly draw from that? The broken part of your brain might really want to believe there's an inverse relationship between the likelihood of something happening vs. how many people say it's not going to, but we know that's not true.

What it actually means is this: do what you like, but don't expect the result, don't plan for the result, don't modify other parts of your life in anticipation of the result, don't harm or sacrifice parts of your life in the hope that the result will retroactively make it worth it, etc.
