Reading this makes me depressed knowing that formalist poetry is no longer a widely practiced art in literary circles. Could it ever make a comeback, or is it incompatible with a hedonistic culture in which even elites rarely get a good classical education?

Actually as long as it is good, formalist poetry is very welcome. People who know their poetry know that so much emphasis on disregarding structure and an over-eagerness for expressing muh (superfluous) feelings is the mark of every shitty contemporary work
It could make a comeback along with powdered wigs and the codpiece but it probably won't for similar reasons
