As the title asks, what is the purpose behind a person who constantly has to lie about book's they've read? Is it a question of insecurity or a vanity about one's own intelligence?

I ask as I like to read, and can admit that when I put in the effort to read some 'real' literature or serious subjects I feel a some what small sense of accomplishment, and I have a friend who constantly has to say he's read any and all books I have. So for example I took the time to try and read Gravity's Rainbow , for better or for worse, which I spent a month every day on.

It comes up in conversation once, he says nothing and I talk to a friend who has read it. The next time I meet him it's like he's digested as much summary descriptions of the book and Pynchon in general, and won't stop talking about it.

This has happened multiple times with different books, and its just exhausting talking to him knowing he's bold face lying about something I love to my face. I used to live with him and know for a fact he does not read books, only buys them for decoration.

This is probably just venting, but I am curious if anyone else has a similar experience and how you handled it.

They seek validation and grew up watching House 'everybody lies' type shit

I know a guy like this who lucked and lied his way into an Operations Manager position just like this, by pretending to know everything and that he's super smart to all the boomers

>What is the mind behind a person who constantly lies about what they've read?
