The one of them strikes the other with a rock but before he dies he handcuffs himself to the other one so the guy is unable to get out of Death Valley being too weak to walk and strapped to a dead body, he is left to die so neither of them get the gold. >>25210377That's fair. In case it wasn't already obvious, I thought this book was absolutely phenomenal. It was my first real introduction to literary naturalism. The ending really moved me, and I've been wondering if Norris might be dabbling in metafiction or parody toward the close. I've also come across some analysis that pokes fun at the literary scene of 1899, especially the craze for mining stories and other Western frontier tropes, suggesting Norris could be subverting the works of Bret Harte or Jack London here.Aside from that, I can shake how depressing this novel is sometimes. There was a scene where McTeague is discussing his future prospects after his marriage to Trina, Marcus' niece, and he talks about how he would grow old in a six bedroom home, and his children's children would be raised in the same house.
