Is Pope's translation of the iliad good?
>>

Depends if you like heroic couplets, and if you don't mind often Roman names being used. Ultimately, Pope's Illiad is a masterpiece of English poetry, but it is more of an adaptation than a translation. The way translations were viewed in Pope's day is not the same way we view them today. It was about artistry above all; see Arthur Golding's Metamorphoses also for this. You shouldn't read them as your first translation, but once you're familiar with the text in accurate translation but still poetic enough to be enjoyable (Lattimore) then you can read these beautiful works.

"It is a very pretty poem, Mr. Pope, but you must not call it Homer."

It is Pope's Iliad. Reading it now, it is very good.
