I assume that sometimes a single chapter from a book is sufficient for their needs. In other cases they are probably aware of the original thought from different source and only need to consult the position in order to reference it. Mostly they are bloating their bibliographies because they don't give a shit and nobody does either, though. Universities deserve scissors cutting through them like almost nothing else.

No, of course not. Professional readers know how to get the information they need out of a book without reading it from cover to cover. There's literally nothing wrong with that.
