I saw that video yesterday and it made me nostalgic for the book, so I'm just listening to it on audiobook again. The older I get, the more I understand what Holden was going through. Being sincere in a world full of phonies just doesn't work and it's hard to imagine how it could be different, the whole thing is just... depressing. No wonder the kid didn't want to think about his future and ended up having a nervous breakdown. You can't win being sincere, but if you play their game, then you can't even enjoy it because you sold a piece of your soul and what you got isn't even worth having.
