I like how entertainingly he writes but most of the mysteries and the characters are really shallow. Is there a writer who writes entertaining, fast-paced mystery/thriller but with actual depth?
Look up James Rollins's Sigma Force series. It's still a slop, but it has more depth and much more testosterone than Brown's self insert.
>>25226467Umberto Eco. In particular Foucault's Pendulum.

Start with his short stories. If you are only depressed, read Calvino's "If on a winter's night a traveler," it's entertaining, fast paced, and has depth, but the main thread is not a thriller. Better yet, listen to the audiobook as you take a walk.>>25226613Thanks, they sound nice.

>>25226863that's why Dan Brown is so appreciated, although I only enjoyed three of his books (the NASA one, from before he became passionate about mystical stuff, is actually fun)
>>25226467the Agent Ray Pendergast series. starting with "Relic" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln ChildFrederick Forsyth, although most of his novels are slow burns. the fast-paced ones are The Devil's Alternative and The Fourth ProtocolClive Cussler has his fans, although I haven't read himDesmond Bagley - Flyaway and Windfall were interesting

>>25226967You're welcome. Rollins is kind of my guilty pleasure. Compared to Dan Brown, Rollins's books have larger scale, better written characters and dialogues, more scientific plots and some actual action sequences. I think James Rollins is Dan Brown for men.
