Now that the dust has settled, why did he do it? the suicide I mean
>>
for the epic memes
>>
He lost faith in humanity's ability to escape death by distraction.
>>
because his most famous work is an abject nonsensical mess that still made him rich and famous. imposter syndrome overload.
>>

He would've loved twitter
>>
>>25226920
The drugs stopped working.
I wonder what he’d be writing now in this current climate?

Probably killed himself because of the 08 recession and the introduction of the iphone. He talked about the constant need to always be entertained in your life and demanding for constant stimulation since the 80s has massively fucked us and our children in the ass. Of course you would want to die if you saw the invention of social media
>>
>>25226920
>why did he do it?
I think it had more to do with an absence of why to live than why to do it.
>>
>>25226920
He was facemeltingly insecure, probably stemming from his supposedly terrible relationship with his mom. He couldn't talk without wincing at himself.
>>
>>25227028
That’s sad.
>>
>>25227028
killed himself out of cringe? not sad, based as fuck
>>
He has a short story called "Good Old Neon" where he writes about being a fraud. I suspect it's very autobiographical and he never solved the supposed paradox of being a fraud and being intensely aware of it but being unable to stop.

People say he killed himself out of depression, like it's just random chemicals issue and he got unlucky. No, he was profoundly unhappy and there was some reason for it. I recall reading some article about him post-death and his personal library was filled with self-help and psychology books, one of them was "The Drama of the Gifted Child" which fits into the whole feeling like a fraud thing.

>>25227028
Yeah, he would often say something, realize how profoundly pretentious it sounded and at the same time he was aware of his own desire to be seen as smart and deep, he would cringe at himself, almost begging the interviewer not to bring any more of this shit out of him. He wore a bandana because he would sweat profusely from anxiety. The worst interview was with that German girl, probably one of his last ones, he would seemingly just throw a bunch of shit at the wall and ask "I'm sorry, does this mean anything to you?" and the girl was very enthusiastic about what he was saying but inside he probably felt dead, it became so easy to fool those around him and the praise he got was meaningless. He was probably so depressed he didn't even sleep with her afterwards.
>>
He didn’t get enough audience pussy
>>
>>25226920
Got butthurt that you no longer had to get up off of the couch to turn on the TV anymore or something gay like that.

>The worst interview was with that German girl,
I wouldn't go that far; she was able to wrangle his 'tism failry well.

Why not?
For someone like DFW who was a strong feeling person and so famously talked about certain things like plateaus, loneliness, sincerity, compassion, etc... it's not at all hard to see why he would kill himself. His worldview was idealistic and that comes at a heavy cost mentally.
At the same time he had attained success but his personal life was not good. I'm sure for him and many successful people who are introspective enough there is a thought something to the effect of "I've done everything I can. I've exhausted my self in the public and professional sphere. Now all that's left is the normal everyday life all beings are subject to and so if I can't find peace and contentment there then there is nothing left for me". I'm sure many famous suicides had the same feelings. You exhaust your self every way you can and then what is left?
I think all the time he was projecting himself onto the world and vice versa. He understood that the world's struggle was his internal struggle or vice versa. Then he realized the world couldn't change and so he wasn't going to change or vice versa. He became alienated from the world and thus alienated from himself. That is raw hopelessness and that is usually why people kill themselves.
Anybody can get there if they're smart enough and have the right personality. If you actually know a person well enough, if you could know everybody well enough, I think it's actually quite predictable who will commit suicide and who won't. There is just a certain concoction that does it. For a public figure like DFW who gave so much of his thoughts yes I think it was predictable.

Why the fuck is ALL "use of substances" automatically labeled as fucking "abuse"? I'm fucking sick of it.
>>
>>25226994
I like the idea of DFW doomscrolling through zoomer brainrot for days on end then ending it all on a livestream
>>
Why look for explanations? There's none. That's how mental illness is. There's no way to completely articulate the phenomenological experience into language. I would know
>>
>>25226920
In all cases, suicide is just natural selection at work.
>>
>Think of it this way. Two people are screaming in pain. One of them is being tortured with electric current. The other is not. The screamer who's being tortured with electric current is not psychotic: her screams are circumstantially appropriate. The screaming person who's not being tortured, however, is psychotic, since the outside parties making the diagnoses can see no electrodes or measurable amperage. One of the least pleasant things about being psychotically depressed on a ward full of psychotically depressed patients is coming to see that none of them is really psychotic, that their screams are entirely appropriate to certain circumstances part of whose special charm is that they are undetectable by any outside party. Thus the loneliness: it's a closed circuit: the current is both applied and received from within.

I've read his biography. The real reason is that he got really, really into Alcoholics Anonymous, and felt like he wasn't truly "sober" if he was taking any kind of psych medication. He also worried that his medication interfered with his writing, maybe the emotional flattening of it, something like that. So he stopped taking his antidepressant (Nardil) and suffered a nasty relapse that required hospitalization and another round of ECT. They started him on Nardil again but it didn't work the second time and he hung himself when his wife went out for groceries

Damn, a little bit of methylene blue could have fixed him probably.

Good Old Neon is one of my favorite pieces of writing, ever. I dont like anything else David wrote.
I think some people just want to kill themselves. David had been talking about wanting to kill himself practically his entire career. Not directly, of course. But it was inevitable.
>>
>>25227194
Good Old Neon is based on someone he knew growing up and it finishes with him reading it wishing the person had the perspective he does. He repeatedly qualified his depression as anxiety based on squelched opportunity and failure/loss of his abilities in the later stage and earlier with an inability to break the pursuit of deep network entertainment and relax. He didn't think of himself as a fraud actually, he was just REALLY insecure and worried he could not live up to what he felt like he could and imagined peers and posterity expecting him to.
>>
>>25228065
He said he had a profoundly diminished ability to write after he received ECT and lost the "floating above it all" flow state and creative upwelling he had priorly while writing.
>>
>>25227483
Dave would have LOVED doomscrolling reels and been fascinated by brainrot as an evolution in media and art form while still decrying it as a symptom of disorder in society.
>>
He killed himself because he knew he hadn't any talent.
>>
Was his suicide note also really long and pointless?

I think DFW felt embarrassed half the interview because the girl understood his American plight way better than he expected and actually had a lot to say about literature. Good interview though.

thread should have ended here - this is the answer (also nice trips)
