how did you like it? some questions for discussion:

>which lies of his did you catch?
>was his wife cheating on him with her cousin?
>did you solve the chocolate puzzle?
>who did he have the talk with "on some station platform" about whether one ever sees the sun in one's dreams?
>did he actually pull that movie move in the end?
>how is the movie?
>where would you rank it?
>>
I got a copy of this for like 2 bux recently but I just finished Bend Sinister so I'm holding off on more Nabokov atm. Make this thread again in a month and then we can talk
>>

good actually. when you do read it, can you pay attention to
>who did he have the talk with "on some station platform" about whether one ever sees the sun in one's dreams?
because i think i might have missed it. how was bend sinister?
>>
>>25228443
>how was bend sinister?
Being a dystopian satire, the plot and a lot of the characters felt sort of one dimensional and cartoony, but that also seemed intentional. The MC is a philosopher with a recently deceased wife tho, which makes room for some pretty poignant stuff about death. The prose is beautiful of course.

Read as my 2nd Nabokov after Lolita, quite good but still doesn't have the oomph of something like Lolita or Pale Fire, a writer in his infancy
>>
my favorites of his are Despair; Glory; King Queen Knave; Laughter in the Dark. I prefer his russian written novels to his english ones and I've read them in russian (it's my native tongue)
>>
>>25229223
I've only read Nab in english but I've always preferred the perspective hopping dreaminess of his russian works to his character study monoliths. Currently doing a reread of his books in release order and love KQK and Luzhin much more now. Currently on The Eye but I tried to read it drunk about two weeks ago and got lost. Maybe I'll finish it today.

weird considering his thoughts on political satires. haven't read that one.

>>25228978
>doesn't have the oomph of something like Lolita or Pale Fire
agreed that they are his best, but I wouldn't call it his infancy. to me it demonstrated how well he was able to handle the page turning suspense basics while being a good sample of all the other things that he usually does. thought the character work was better than his very late stuff too.

>>25229223
>it's my native tongue
damn i envy that. thoughts on Gogol and Pushkin's prose (curious as to what specifically remains untranslatable) and how crucial they are to The Gift? and did you read The Double?

>>25230036
>The Eye
I was surprised to see how little he changed in density since The Eye. it's not just a straightforward execution of that premise, there's still more in the background. like the handkerchief i think smurov was the one who stole it and that's what he is referring to at the very end. also assuming he's not actually a ghost, why does he ask khrushchov to stop reciting the alphabet as if they're talking to him in a séance. is it just to signal his belief that he is a ghost?
>>
>>25230108
Yeah his first big jump is definitely between Luzhin and The Eye. It's doubly impressive that it was published only a year after. I was following along until he got to the bookstore and then about 15 pages later accepted that I could not read that book on an eight beers deep debuff
>>
>>25230130
>eight beers
Fix your life. Genuinely. Imagining what you look like is making me sick.
>>
>>25230221
Yeah wtf. Switch to a 12% abv beer and then you only need to have 2-4. ez
>>
>>25230221
I'm just a normal guy man. I'm sorry that your life has been wasted in self suck echo chambers that think getting drunk and watching a movie with your girlfriend at 23 years old on a Saturday is some sort of creeping illness. You're allowed to just talk about the books instead of playing the wizened diviner.
>>
>>25230229
I've been recently drinking mostly 8-9% only on the weekends and two tallcans put me to bed so that's about roughly eight standard drinks. I'm not chugging miller lights. Where are you finding 12%? The liquor store by my house stocks at max 9.9s I believe
>>
>>25230252
>>25230263
>IT WASN'T ACTUALLY 8 BEERS IT WAS TWO 24oz BEERS!!!
>I WASN'T DRINKING ALONE!!! I WAS DRINKING WITH MY GIRLFRIEND!!!
Nobody goes home from a night of drinking to sit down and read a book, especially a night of drinking with their girlfriend.
>>
>>25230263
These are my gas station go-tos
>>25230339
Beer is really good. You should stop being a fag and try it sometime.
>>
>>25230339
Guy who doesn't realize that if you're drinking in your living room you don't have to "go home"
>>
>>25230339
Why are you so mad are you a recovering alcoholic or something? You sound like you need a beer
>>
>>25230364
I think I've seen these at a local grocery store. I'll have to try them out. Thanks for not being a fucking sperg anon
