Do you go to the library? Are there any good or rare books you have borrowed or booked out? I just requested these and once saw a first edition Ulysses which may have been touched by James Joyce himself.

i dont go to my local libraries because ill probably get groomed by trans-affirming librarians and then get splooged by on homeless people watching porn

Just go to a university library where homeless people get kicked out and the gender stuff is at a minimum. I don’t get why you guys even go to city or council libraries.

dont you have to pay for a membership to a uni library? i think i even have to pay as an alumnus.

I’ve been going to my town’s library once or twice a week since late 2024 and I’m pretty sure one of the librarians has developed a crush on me due to my mysterious autistic aura and I once made about a dozen cool ass perfect haikus on the spot when the whiteboard near the entrance said write your own haikus.

I've always found local libraries to be quite barren. They've clearly made a move to cater to low SES youth which means stocking the latest YA sloppa.

yeah the chicago library system is sick. Can have 50 books out at a time and can have a book out for 45 weeks before it blocks you from taking out more. Never pay fines unless you lose a book. They'll ship books between branches for you too. Only flip side is that it can take a while to get your holds.
Tbh I often just buy used books on ebay for old shit since it's often like 5 bucks, but for new titles where only 30 dollar copies exist library is the move. Straight up free books.
Never borrowed anything too rare but I do love when I get an ancient copy of something. I like seeing annotations that could be from the 50s

most uni libraries over here have restrictions on non-students coming in and most of them hide the stacks anyway, so what's the fun

I already have my own, expansive personal library. I should really charge for friends and family to even dare to peruse my erudite And carefully curated shelves, I'd charge a premium to borrow And if my books get damaged prepare to die.

I regularly use the Chicago library system as well. I wonder if we've ever seen eachother

Can’t you get a card for uni libraries or ask permission?
>>
>>25228732
Most private universities will not let any outsiders into the library
Public universities you can go in but you have to deal with gay rules like not all rooms being open to you or having to leave earlier, but yes you can get a card. You just have to put up with hassles

I guess it sucks being a poorfag in America. I’m in Australia and I can borrow 100+ books at a time from my old uni’s library—and there’s heaps of high school students who study at the uni. The worst I had to deal with was an international student (hijabi) kick me out of a room that she’d booked today.
But it wasn’t that bad. I just went to go read in an air conditioned bit of the library until it got too cold.
Don’t community colleges have libraries too?
>>
>>25228729
possibly! I pretty much only use the Bridgeport branch so maybe unlikely, but maybe more likely we've checked out the same copy of the same book
>>

I like going but can't find any seating that doesn't have the lingering scent of piss from all the homeless that hang out there.
Last time the short story I was reading had to do with railroad bums so it at least felt like 4DX reading. This happened during a jury duty lunch break, ended up so engrossed that I had to race up 15 floors of stairs to get back to the courtroom on time.

My university library is great. I've had quite a few medical textbooks on loan for years from there - you don't have to return them unless somebody else requests the book. Also, the main library has floors and floors of great fiction.
When I go back home to see my family, I have the displeasure of visiting my local library - it has maybe half a shelf of literature and dozens of shelves dedicated to YA stuff and romantasy.

I live in a small town in a peripheral European country. There is one public library, but it's basically a place for secondary school students to gather and do their school group assignments. The small catalogue has been adjusted to this and is comprised of high school mandatory readings for the most part (some of them abridged to suit juvenile readers). The only people older than 18 that I (rarely) see there are some civil servant tests applicants, I assume.

I use the New York Public Library and it's great. I can have any book in the system shipped to my local branch, the circulating collection is fairly solid, and anything they don't have can be borrowed from interlibrary loan which takes a while but hasn't failed me yet. Though it's a very popular library with lots of users: sometimes I check out something and run out of time to finish reading it but I can't renew it because someone else has a hold on it. I could just keep it because there are no late fees (based), but I'm not a prick.
