I have seen people discuss if there is any particular actions that a character can take that make it impossible for that character to be redeemed or at the very least be sympathetic. I am of the opinion that any skilled writer can redeem a character, even if they have committed atrocious deeds, as long as the character faces the consequences of their actions and shows genuine and believable growth.
