Not OP but for me the sadness came from realizing that none of the sequels live up to the absolute book-kino that is Dune book 1. I like/love all the books up till Chapterhouse for varying reasons, but book 1 is just perfect in my eyes.

I think a completely fresh exposure also plays a part in this
Fremen, Harkonnens, Atredies, Sardukar and Arrakis, all these things as a concept peaked in the first book.
The entire series after that gets hijacked by politics and the golden path.
