I have been reading Terry Pratchett for the first time and I've been enjoying it. I think Small Gods has been my favourite book so far, Brutha's journey has been the closest to a historical fiction adventure or a classic fantasy adventure and I think it helped the structure of the plot.What do you guys think of his writing and who was your favourite Discworld protagonist?

>>25230821Love them. I discovered Pratchett in highschool and it was the most hilarious shit ever, while still containing nuggets of life wisdom and things to think about. I'd say he was a pretty big influence on me growing up. Now that I'm older I see the parts where he tended to make the same kind of joke over and over, but I still think Discworld is an excellent choice for someone's formative years.As far as ranking them, I'd say watch>witches>unaffiliated and the wizards rank at the very bottom, with The Last Continent firmly holding its ground as some of the worst shit i've read. I don't include the Alzheimer's books in that ranking because I'm not a monster.

Sourcery, The colour of magic, the last continent and the light fantastic were forgetably, retconned or poorly structured.But Interesting Times and Eric both were fun romps and gave Rincewind and friends some real adventures.

Of the standalone novels, I think that Pyramids or Small Gods might be my favourite. It didn't have to reference the other books and it could just be a self contained funny novel.Also Ptracy was a hot blonde bimbo
>>25230821I dislike pretty much all the Wizards plotline except the odd Librarian scene.Death as a character is generally very overrated except in Reaper Man.Vimes is probably the one I like best since he has a clear progression throughout the books (even if I don't really care for Snuff)The Witches books are okay but the third witch du jour is never as good as Weatherwax or Ogg. Tiffany Aching's series however adresses this concern and they're pretty underrated IMO.Moist is pretty alright

I started them chornologically and read the first 10. I'm on a break from Pratchett and will continue some time in the future, but I like him. Guards Guards is the best so far.
His books are as pointless as Douglas Adam's

>>25231071Anything to do with Hex gave me a chuckle, but the wizards on the island of the intelligent designer was particularly bad. A strawman that wasn't attacked in an interesting or novel way.I always felt that Wyrd Sisters was the perfect book to start the series with, it's in the Top 5 and Granny Weatherwax was one of the stronger characters in the series. I felt that Nanny Ogg could get a bit stale with all the dirty jokes and crassness and that Magrat played a good straight man, but her romance with Verrence was a bit thin.
