No amount of /lit/ elitism will stop me from loving this guy's work. He really is one of the best living authors.

Also his new book is coming out in 2-3 months. Will you be reading it?

Also general Murakami thread.

Why do women adore Murakami? There's lots of male Murakami fans (op) but every Murakami superfan I've ever met has been a woman. Why? All his female characters are literally
>oooo protagonist, I have giant tits and I'm like, ethereal
>oooo protagonist, I'm like a little sprite, I'm so small, with giant tits
>oooo don't you want to fuck me, I've never had a thought ever, ooooo

I loved Pinball/Hear The Wind sing and thought everything else I've read was a snooze. Does he ever return to that style?
>>
i only read 1q84 and some short story about fishermen living on a beach and i just find his writing extremely affected and studied, sorry.

Murakami has actually been accused of hating women many times. One of his books, specifically Kafka On The Shore, has a dialogue where an author mouthpiece dunks on a feminist in an argument.

I feel like women love or hate him depending on what they think about sex, because Murakami fundamentally views women as sexual beings that are primarily characterized by their sexuality.

I like his jazz collection a lot. His writing from what I've encountered doesn't inspire me at all.
>>
>>25236733
What do you mean by Jazz collection?

Like the songs he mentions in his books?
>>
>>25237065
no i mean his literal physical collection of jazz CDs and LPs
>>
>>25237074
Did he show them to you personally?
Where can I find it?

How in the hell do you know what his Jazz collection looks like?

I've only read Kafka and Wind-Up Bird but I loved both. Should I read Wild Sheep Chase or Hard Boiled Wonderland next? Got both pretty cheap
>>
>>25237135
Read both

he used to be my favorite author, and i've read most of his works. one day, i completely lost interest in him. he's fine as an entry point for japanese literature, but there're so many better writers, both translated and untranslated. a wild sheep chase is probably his best novel.

What would you recommend over Murakami?

I've only read Dazai.

You like eating shit, fine by me.

He's not even the best living author named Murakami. His books, characters, plots, prose, all of it, are trash.

>bobbleheads
I don't know why I'm surprised. I guess I knew he'd have them but I somehow thought he had more taste than to show the to the public. What a brainless old Jap.

you can't fully appreciate or understand jazz unless you can play it, and those who can play it don't waste time writing about it
>>
>>25237114
there are several articles and videos and photographs, anon......
>>
>>25240104
this goes for any music genre worth a damn

NTA but Waseda university has a library dedicated to him which features a replica of his writing room, including a large collection of jazz records you can listen to.

Women actually like being treated as just objects of sexual desire by men (you just have to be the 'right kind of man'). In practice most men give them the ick so it doesnt seem like that but it's clear from all the romance/erotica slop they choose to consume.

2nd july in Japan, anon. I don't think we'll see anything in English before september.
>Will you be reading it?
Absolutely not. He is known for writing shit female characters, and his next book will have a female protagonist. My guess is that it's just him trying his hand at something new, and I haven't read anything from him, so I'll skip it. One of my collegues adores him though, so at least I have already a present for her this Christmas.
>general Murakami thread
The new yorker published the first chapter of the new book, btw.

Next book protagonist is going to be a woman. I am almost tempted to check it out just because of that. It may end up being hilarious
>>
>>25237135
Hard boiled wonderland is kind of a shittier version of kaka on the shore so maybe check that out
>>

Really like Norwegian Wood but I heard that's an unusual work for him and nothing else he wrote is like that.
>>
>>25240292
Did he show you these photographs?

I read Norwegian Wood, it was ok.
