Why is tumblrslop obsessed with circus themes and old-fashioned presenters speaking like early 20th century radio hosts?
Can this be traced back to some common seminal work?
>>
>>25237741
I think it's because circuses and circus workers are the core of modern western gay and lesbian culture.
>>
>>25237741
I don't think it's really complicated. The Circus is a kind of aeshtetic, that everyone is aware of to a degree, and when you borrow something from it, it lends itself to a pretty distinct look. Adding to that, it's associated with children, so you can play with that idea of corrupting a cute and childish thing, which is something that's pretty popular nowadays (and it's getting a bit repetitive, to be honest...). Distinct + Well known + Easy to use.

Same applies to the radio host voice. It's a thing everyone recognizes and is a fun thing to add onto a character.

it's a great question honestly
a lot of it seems to be "corrupted" or an otherwise horror-lite spin on childhood motifs, FNAF is also an absolutely huge one
also groomers absolutely love this shit

It all began with Saturnalia, with its antinomian ways it was deeply contrasting with ordinary Roman life with its rules and rituals for everything...
[300 pages later]
And we find in the Renaissance the peak of the carnival prefiguring the bal masqué, the inner need of man to be free from himself. As alcohol quiets the the rational mind, so the mask frees civilization from itself...
>>
>>25237792
The inner man becomes the outer man.
...
It's all because of smartphones! Panoptikon.
I sense a rebirth of the mask. The desire to be invisible in the sun. To be hidden in front of each other's eyes.
Larp within larp.
Roleplay.
Moksha.
Why do we play games? Watch movies? Love reality tv? What is this desire to experience without being known? To live outside memory? Freedom from judgement. Is not the entire world already a mask of the soul?
>>
I don’t know about all that but the most adjacent thing I can think of is Rabelais for his grotesque carnival humour. He’s brilliant though and the stuff in your OP looks really gay.
>>
i used to be a very tumblry person. here is the answer:
1) in the mid 2010s everyone who played fnaf and undertale said "OH indie games are when you have a cutesy superficial story and then a deep dark arg story underneath!" and there hasnt been any innovation in indie games since, because if you step outside of the fake box autistic retards impose over these games they refuse to learn how to appreciate anything new. 2) tumblr's (super)userbase is filled with middle class white people who have internalized the fact that being middle class and white is bad, who also love worshiping the DSM, therapy, pretending that anything with statistics and figures attached to it is gospel. very God Delusion-people. thus they want dark and edgy themes in fiction like anybody but feel visceral shame (blushing, hot flashes, adrenaline spikes) when dark and edgy things happen outside of a preconceived structure they learned in English 101 to characters that arent cartoon monsters

i actually like Toby Fox games and i love Vivzie's stuff because its explicitly trying to piss you off from every angle with the safe-edgy thing, but TADC takes itself too seriously even though the animation is good. none of these share a common ancestor as much as they share a common culture that they came from, the internet's Greenwich Village, aka Tumblr

why is this on the lit board btw

Ok but why?
>>
>>25237927
because it's such a clear cultural pattern that I have seen nobody tall about
>>
>>25237896
i wasnt insulting you or implying it was a bad choice i just didnt immediately see the connection

it is true that undertale existed before tadc and hazbin/helluva. what im trying to explain is that the reason these trends took off is because, at their root, they are appealing to stylistic choices that, to anyone who has internalized a lot of tumblr, are "tumblr vibes." its hard to explain what i mean until you start seriously investigating other cultures, but in the same way that a NYC resident will be like "oh god this shit is so gay it sounds like it came from The Village" or "yeah that guy's a douche, he's definitely from Staten Island" people on the internet can be like "this is science worship, sounds like fuckin reddit" or "this is gay, it HAS to be from tumblr." the fact that the trope had any ground to take off on was because Toby Fox had deeply internalized a lot of tumblr. i dont think my reasoning is very clear but that happens when you try and use language to describe experiential things

i would say after some thought that forerunners to contemporary tumblrslop (which are good in their own right, but gen z doesnt understand why theyre good so they only shallow-copy earlier art) are Yume Nikki (and yume 2kki/.flow,) ZUN games/music, 80s/90s cartoons on Boomerang/Cartoon Network, anime you could find ripped for free on old youtube, monty python, extremely flamboyant manga, etc. anything that was quirky in a less extreme way than tumblr is now
>>
>>25237952
As someone who spent too much time on Tumblr as a teenager, I agree, that it has a distinct kind of flavor that you see spread to other things sometimes. You're right it's hard to explain - I guess the way I would put it is "cute ironic quirkyness". The quirkyness is the most important part, of course. But the cuteness is also a part of it. Tumblr is primarily a fandom site, so they enjoy gushing over approachable looking characters, and they will portray a character in a more approachable way, even if it isn't exactly that in the original medium. Combined with that, the sense of humor tends to be more Ironic - lots of wordplay, which is fitting for a blogging site.

Another thing to keep in mind is, that Tumblr is very young female-dominated. You can argue that a lot of them are some variation of nonbinary, but at the end of the day, Tumblr's userbase is primarily female. So its taste is basicaly what appeals to chronically online teenage girls, maybe with less emphasis on more traditionally female interests.
>>
>>25237943
For autists I'd say a midcentury radio broadcaster or circus master are both directly communicating information without a lot of the nuances of person-to-person communication which autists struggle with. It's also colorful and expressive in a way that autistic people can understand and latch onto easily. There's also the sonic effect of these franchises having colorful and well-defined characters, as well as the vintage aesthetic, which some autists are attracted to because life in the 1920s seems more structured and formal.

i am autistic but i realized that no one really likes autists so i started disciplining myself and learned how to be a real person with my 135 iq. essentially what autistic people are drawn to is drastic changes in style. this is why DFW was drawn to GR and Ulysses, why autistic kids go nuts over Deltarune pastiching TLOZ and flipflopping tones every 20 minutes, why a band like BTBAM might change genres every 90 seconds, etc. autists (like me) are fundamentally attracted to overt changes in breadth, not depth, and "1920s transatlantic guy voice" is drastically different from "gay theater women" (vaggie/charlie) which is drastically different from "gay slut nasally voiced spider" (angeldust) which is drastically different from "gruff wolf-bat thing," etc. also in Hazbin the animation style will do the toby fox thing and abruptly switch levels of detail and display overly exaggerated manga-ish facial expressions. my gut feeling is "HOLY SHIT I LOVE ALL OF THIS" when i see it, which i in my adult life have had to check with rationality and self-awareness so i dont get thrown in a loony bin

People who really enjoy the listed properties are the first human generation to have grown up in a world of completely saturated hyperreality. The various "realms" featured in Hazbin, TADC and undertale/deltarune, much like Baudrillard's disneyland analogy, exist as "genuine fakes" that allow the subject (the player/watcher) to retreat into them and differentiate them from some concept of a more "real" reality. The thing is, reality as it stands, no longer exists. It has stopped existing at some point in the past, and what we are experiencing in 2026 (through various forms of media) are merely the surfaces and simulations of this past reality.

The circus, the hazbin version of hell, or the toby fox underworld exist as foils for the outer, the external, the "real". Zoomers feel a level of attraction to this virtuality, because it's the only reality they know, and they want to seek out some sort of a higher or more verifiable state of being. Escape the simulation of the circus, mediate the differences between hell and heaven, restore the balance between lightners and darkners: find some sort of a civilizational reality or metanarrative in the midst of an increasingly unsettling and most of all, unreliable existence.

The "old-fashioned presenter" trope is very interesting to me. You could very well just pin it on the tumblrsexyman slopshipping crazies, but i think its endurance through the past decade shows that it could very well be more than that.

Caine, Alastor, Tenna, it really is too much of a coincidence. These characters (and even spamton and EVEN fucking mettaton) have several curiously overlapping traits: confidence, decisiveness, tidiness and self-reliance. When you think about it, every other main character in hazbin or deltarune or TADC is a sensitive, emotionally stunted crybaby, when it really comes down to it. All three properties are deeply feminized, some would call it "fag shit". But these characters, who do exude a level of self-assuredness are all intertwined with different types of simulation and media: an adopted artificiality. A further step in "genuine fakeness". Using the performative aspects of presenting to cast the shadow of inhumanity on these characters, undermining their relatability, because they are not neurotic enough to be normal. (in the eyes of gen z)
>>
>>25238344
I have no idea about any of that, other than the Baudrillardian argument for it. I imagine these characters to be lacking in nuance, but their traits that they’re known for are exaggerated. They’re watching characters in their own hyperreality which without them knowing, they probably relate to.
> Caine, Alastor, Tenna, it really is too much of a coincidence. These characters (and even spamton and EVEN fucking mettaton) have several curiously overlapping traits: confidence, decisiveness, tidiness and self-reliance.
And I imagine these characters to be shallow in their neuroticism, shallow enough that these zoomers like to attach themselves to them.
But what do I know? I have literally no idea who these characters are.

The old fashioned presenter trope really makes me question what's the deal with modern zoomer-focused media and the obsession with the past it has. These seemingly older characters from 97 or 57 always seem to be more confident and exagerated than their younger counterparts while mostly not resembling any period accurate traits. Im not very big on tumblrslop but I have noticed science fiction's recent raging obsession with retrofuturism and shaping machinery into a sort of very innacurate 60-70s aesthetic without it explicitly being a 40s-70s inspired setting like Fallout or Bioshock, it's almost as if this sort of pastiche is a symptom of modern writers being unable to come up with inventive aesthetics for what the future would look like or deeming such things as too idealistic and bright like what our great grandfathers envisioned 2030 would be. Im still piecing as to why it's suddenly peaked so much in popularity when it comes to sci fi but the same can be true for indie animation and games with constantly calling back to the 60s-90s but in a very insecere and over the top mocking way as if people back in the day were caricatures to try and not seem like something explicitly conservative

Happy Tree Friends is the earliest internet thing that comes to my mind for the whole "subverted children's media" thing. Danganronpa, Thats another tumblrtroon phenomenon, I suppose it’s akin to a carnival, with stereotype characters (there’s also always an outlier who is your average edgy anime man, but the juxtaposition between this character and the rest of the cast is so great in terms of intellect and eccentricity that people love to project themselves onto him… or they draw porn of him) that zoomers have tried to replicate. That itself is a hyperreal school setting in which they must escape along with the projection of these characters taken out of context.

Jews, women and autists didnt understand the purpose and actions of Apollo/Eros and Dionysus/Ares by stealing their things for their own gain.

The problem is that these people are ordinary plebs who are not connected to higher purpose and instead appeal mostly to the general masses.

They started by becoming the jesters and entertainers to mock and undermine authority in the eyes of people, and replaced the theatrical artists and priests through imitation.

You know who dressed up as Dionysus? Alexander the Great.

You know what he is not? Anything they try to portray as being of Dionysus.

It is all part of the subversion to flip over the hierarchy.

That's why they push democracy and hate the King while they try to appeal to the Queens who are not in charge to overthrow the stability.

Please keep this is mind.

Help me fight off these stupid cunts to reestablish sanity once more and my reputation.

my issue is that if zoomers knew how to blend the imagination of tumblrslop with the depth of traditional art (not to mention the absurd erudition the internet can give you with the right discipline) we could get possibly some of the best art ever in the next 50 years. but if kids ONLY stick to undertale and fnaf its never going to get any better, just reorganizations of superficial genre tropes that never quite feel satisfying. i wish you guys didnt feel the need to think people can only stick in one camp

I also fucking hate it when they, those hidden shadow hands that influence the internet and sway general population opinion, give my things to inspire the bisexual lesbians that practically clog places like Tumblr

I have preferred the Japanese artists whenever I want some art of the boys in media, but the Western ones are terrible.

I dont know why they are giving it to women. Men are better artists and authors.

Pic related is passable but too femme anyway and based on a woman's writings which are very mixed in the original intent of things.

I want this shit to stop so bad.

They dont care about doing anything thats right. They just want to switch everything to appeal to the general masses.

To make money and because they know that if we were to gatekeep things they would be the first ones kicked out.

>>
>>25238558
Perhaps… but, I’m not very versed in what the tumblr adjacent creative process actually is. How would something like that look, even?
>>
>>25238379
Zoomers grew up in a spiritually dead world and with the dominating presence of technology, they're able to peek into the past in a far more intimate way than what was possible before. They subconsciously know that something is off so they gravitate to these older aesthetics because they're desperately trying to satisfy that spiritual need within themselves via this style of media because it relates to various very important pillars of the zoomer experience; social anxiety, mental health, faggotry, etc. and a desire to live in the past where it's possible to be confident, self-assured and not wallow in nihilism.
Obviously this comes with the caveat that zoomers want the past without any of its icky, heckin' problematic parts such as religion, more traditional values having to be upheld and racism/sexism/homophobia.
>>
>>25238572
> Obviously this comes with the caveat that zoomers want the past without any of its icky, heckin' problematic parts such as religion, more traditional values having to be upheld and racism/sexism/homophobia.
They’re so lacking in self awareness it’s frightening. They also do this revisionist thing with art and media from before they were born, using their mental gymnastics to argue something that appeals to them actually conforms with their sociological beliefs.
>>
>>25237741
Because LGBTQueers and feminist types relate to circus freaks. They feel "different" and "misunderstood", so they sympathize with outcasts. Ergo, Tumblr and the circus are one in the same.
>>
Why is it, from what I’ve seen, so very puerile and cringe? Like, it’s supposed to be advertised for older teens (right?) yet, feels so immature, and the content therein is so insincere and ironic while also trying to act as though it has something to say, I can’t help but feel embarrassed at myself for even trying to give it a chance
>>
>>25238577
I've noticed that as well. It's honestly baffling how common it is. I imagine it's because their minds would break if they didn't try and rationalize their enjoyment of something that could have even the slightest chance of being perceived as problematic in the modern day, whether it's due to the creator or the actual art itself or even the fans of something. The neuroticism is off the charts.
>>
>>25238578
To add to this, it's also why Tumblr is filled to the bolt on tits with theatre kids. The circus coincides with their desire to be "seen", and it pulls on their fantasies. The theatre kid to troon pipeline is real. Just look at Hollywood and the weirdies they call actors.
>>
>>25238598

I just want to point out Five Nights at Freddy's is an outlier to ; this whole concept.
>developed by a practicing Christian
>developed solely by him for years (it was him and a computer in his basement)
>animatronics were played straight
>conceptually animatronics were childrens' souls doomed by an evil murderer
>by clearing the five nights you progress in the story
>story ultimately ends with the evil murderer being thwarted by you and the childrens' spirits are freed
>despite the child souls being hostile they are portrayed as victims, not evil
>game creator doesn't allow crossovers with stuff like Fortnite for above reason (he didn't want to encourage fans to "help them" kill)
>murderer is not glorified and is just a horrific beast
Call it nitpicking but Freddy's is really just a thing kids liked that child predators used to lure them in, it's a far cry from other media that deliberately includes sex or gore.

>The old fashioned presenter trope really makes me question what's the deal with modern zoomer-focused media and the obsession with the past it has.
:
Have you seen what life is for the average teenager or early twenty-something nowadays? A certain generation who is blamed for everything (and deserves it) took a fire axe to the Achilles heel of their various successors, leaving the youngest people alive with absolutely no role models or "next step" to look up to because all they'll find are neurotic, medicated, paranoid, struggling, suffering, antisocial wrecks of varying shape and size. The young are suffering; their older siblings and parents are suffering. Then preceding all of that is the group who decided to liquidate an entire culture and country (that they inherited from a war people no longer believe was just) embodying just about every cultural evil imaginable. And if the young venture past that... they're now in some antiquated era with scarce relation to the modern one. The people who belonged to that era are either dead or so old that their recollection would be just as muddy as experiencing remnants of it in the present day.

To be fair, he’s not entirely wrong you know. How can you assume that this phenomenon came from literature? Or was throughly documented in literature? Your question is very broad and doesn’t necessarily pertain to it as much as it does, say television or painting (which is more likely)

You also forgot to add that FNAF is the only relativly popular IP made in the 2010s with an actual all white cast of characters
Holy shit Scott...

I do not know if the trend started because of literature or music theatre or whatever. I am asking here so people who might know can chip in. If in the end it turns out it's just some cringe movie or videogame, tough luck, I though there was more substance to it

Sorry for my spergout OP, i thought you made this thread out of malice.
But to answer your question seriously, i'm fairly certain none of those elements come from either Literature, Theatre or any sort of High Art.
My best guess is that the Circus is heavily featured ue to Millenials being an highly infatilized people and constantly longing to go back to their childhoods, so the Circus ends up representing that time of their lives. And there is also the whole angle about clowns being hecking creepy save me niggerman entities nowadays, that probably adds to their fascination with the circus, since i know younger generations are obessed with low brow horror.
In regards to Television Hosts i think the same thing about those people's childhood applies. From the 1950s to early 2000s the American populace were basically raised by the idiot box, and Millenial children grew up watching Game Show and Talk Show hosts constantly. So when they are writing their cartoons, video games or whatever else, they end up thinking "Wouldn't it be quirky to have an charming Television host in my creation, just like i used to watch in the hecking Teevee".
I don't really think it's anything all that deep OP that warranted you making this thread.

Too much information these kids are getting, everything needs to be meta and subversive because sincerity is cringe and boring
Old time-y themes but not too old so that hack writers can experiment without having to spoon feed information to the audience

What always bothered me was that the callbacks in these types of works all seem relativly recent. Romanticizing old timey figures and the past has been done to death by now and we have whole generations raised on cowboys or playing as medieval knights but romanticizing something so close to us like the 70s, 80s or even the 90s just seems like such an odd time frame to pick. I would label it nostalgia bait but evidently its geared at a zoomer audience

It all goes back to Gnosticism and Twin Peaks.

>TADC's influences include The Matrix, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Toy Story, Evangelion, and the Raggedy Ann movie
>Hazbin Hotel and Undertale/Deltarune were inspired by Homestuck, the definitive digital Gnostic pop fiction
>Toby Fox pulled from a bunch of 90s JRPGs which all were heavily inspired by Evangelion and Twin Peaks
>Toby and Goose are huge fans of David Lynch

Young people are drawn to Gnostic Christianity because the post-WW2 reality is not unlike the material realm described in Gnosticism: it was engineered, cultivated, and designed by Authority for the purpose of keeping people trapped/enslaved and farmed for their energy (loosh). WW2 fundamentally changed life in a way that most people really don't reflect on, the daily life that we experience and participate in is completely different from how normal human interactions played out in human societies found all over the globe for thousands of years.

>>25238636
FNAF isn't entirely an outlier to this concept. It's gradually become more Gnostic as Scott has leaned more into the sci-fi/fantasy aspects (Agony/Remnant resembling Divine Sparks and Loosh, simulated realities, etc) with Afton starting out as a Satan figure and gradually becoming more of a Demiurge.

>>25238344
These works are metamodernist, with Vivzie's works representing a creative perspective that's much more normie/materialist when compared to Toby or Goose. It's telling that Vivzie was uncomfortable with depicting God or Jesus in her worldbuilding despite the story fundamentally requiring that the metaphysics be Gnostic in order to function, which is why the end result is "Heaven bad, Adam bad, the Angelic patriarchy is bad" despite the fact that a big plot point is that the Apple was responsible for Sin (selfishness) and Gnosis (free will and knowledge) in her story.

But that has more to do with how Vivzie has hangups about religion and daddy issues (she hates the church, her mom, and her exes but she can't admit that her dad was similarly a massive shithead) than anything else.

>middle class white people
I've known more than a few girls from working glass drug-destroyed families that used tumblr heavily and tried to imagine being anywhere but our shitty small town.
>>
>>25239354
Fun fact: when Tumblr peaked in terms of numbers and online relevancy, more than half of all its users were middle class/working-class urban Anglo women with internet access, a fair chunk of which were clearly neurodivergent, LGBT, or both. Most of this userbase went to Twitter, naturally.

I work with kids and this pattern has never really gone away across my years of teaching. The cause is multifaceted (women having no choice but to join the workplace, the sheer level of abuse in Anglo homes, the Anglo community being atomized since conception, the Anglo community being destroyed not unlike black communities were with drugs, Anglo women being pushed to take SSRIs, autistic Anglo women being punched down on hard, Anglo women throwing themselves into hyper-consumerism as a coping mechanism, etc).
>>
>>25239358
An undermentioned component, in my experience, is that Anglo descended people disproportionately make up the populations of small towns, be it in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Small towns as a whole have been fucked hard by modernity and atomization. They're also the worst place to be if you're gay or neurodivergent. Everyone romanticizes them, thinking they'll raise their kids in the country so their kids will be having adventures in the wilderness every weekend. But for a lot of rural kids, they retreat into online spaces instead and become the most atomized, lonely people in the world.
>>
>>25239354
yeah this is a lot more accurate
the whole tenderqueer, they/them, nonbinary, dinergoth etc aesthetic is an under/working/lower middle class phenomenon
>>
>>25239362
I honestly blame hyper-feminism (the psyop) in light of 9/11 and the 08 financial crisis as to why tomboy/autistic girls/theater girls took to non-binary crap.

>feminism for the past several decades: we need to take women and men out of the boxes that society has constructed for them!
>(proceeds to switch the boxes and then shames women for being poor while shaming men for being alienated while ironically doubling down on the boxes in an attempt to be inclusive)

Don't get me wrong, there's certainly room for American culture to discuss and cultivate a third gender concept...it's just that what we're dealing with is the result of top-down social engineering to atomize people and turn them into capital.
>>
>>25237741
our generation beat them over the head about how good our generation's content was and now there's a vocal majority of kids that to try and fit in deluded themselves into thinking "old" low-effort stuff (even if just in ahestetic) is all good.
I'm sure social media like twitter that fuesd containment sites like tumblr and normie sites like facebook had something to do with this, basically weirdos spreading their sperg and normies eating it up.
If you want to make a massive splash in the modern internet just make a cartoon character that's easy to make porn of and you'll see it everywhere.

>there's certainly room for American culture to discuss and cultivate a third gender concept
I don’t know, that sounds terrible even if handled well.

More reason for me to hate that quirk chungus hack David Lynch

Clowns are always popular, its just the depiction of them changes over generations. They're kind of a universal archetype. Gen X and Millenials were obsessed with spooky and evil clowns like IT. You have popular bands like ICP for example, and haunted circuses are popular on Halloween. You have the YA book Cirque du Freak. Gothic or haunted circuses were popular in video games too, Painkiller and CarnEvil for example.

Young people now are leaning into more positive portrayals of clowns and circuses. It seems to emphasize the otherworldly or multidimensional aspect more, without being outright horror-related like Gen X and millenials liked.
>>
>>25239816
Yeah, but it’s not the cool funny clown thing, pie in the face, flower exuding a dubious liquid HONK HONK, either but instead, some redditor on adderall making stupid quips.

(im 25237855) im an artsy white cisguy zoomer with schizo tendencies from a working class family that pushed for giving me a better education while in turn bullying me for having educated interests at home, fuckin checks out lol. the detached irony makes plenty sense when you put it in this perspective. thanks for the insight

my understanding of "middle class" i think is a little flawed, apologies. i think most people think "bourgeoisie" when they hear middle class but my mental referent is "lower middle" for some reason, need to work on that. evidently my explanation isnt as strong as i thought either

its just fucking autism. its the same as dudes who only listen to video game music and electroswing and steampunk aesthetics, etc. they are stuck in the swag = boys, class = men mindset. its a percieved sense of superiority because they didnt want to engage in listening to lil wayne and shit like their classmates did so they pretend to be enlightened and intelligent by listening to the "daring" synthesis of swing jazz and EDM, wow!

because they are theater kids but less intelligent and literary so instead of classical theatre, they are into the slop version of theatre which is circuses and cabarets and shit.
>>
>>25241237
They could have at least went full speed ahead with this image and become avant teens listening to Stockhausen and Onkyo-kei. But that would require more effort than they’re willing to put in I suppose.
>>25241243
I don’t feel like these tumblr troons have even been to a real circus however…
>>
>>25237741
I don't really associate undertale with circus themes and old fashioned presenters honestly, don't know enough about deltarule to comment.

One of the earlier biggest tumblrcore work which almost nobody seems to be discussing was homestuck. I do think the people theorising it's due to autism miss the mark somewhat. Maybe it's just not true for me but as an autist I don't find drastic changes in style compelling, and become a bit annoyed if a work that doesn't establish itself as someone fantastical or sci-fi does crazy stuff that ruins my suspense of disbelief. I do agree with the exaggerated facial features/emotional expression part because that's clearly the explanation for autistic chuds and anime.

A circus is more or less a found family with common interests. It's the perfect analogy for faggots that have been rejected by their biological families and create stand-ins centered around their sick fetishes.
