Without his genius, there would have been no Fyodor Dostoevsky, no Franz Kafka, no Mikhail Bulgakov, and I am grateful to him for everything. He is my favorite writer.

Shut up, cretin.

Yes, it’s my favourite novel of the 19th century along with Moby Dick.
He’s like Dostoevsky as an absurd satirist but a much more adept writer in my opinion, take a look at his short stories too.

No idea about english, but slovak translations are really good.

No argument from me. I read his Petersburg tales when I was 16 and have never forgotten them. My favourite painter Ilya Repin made a fantastic painting as well of his final madness (pic related)

Yup, I completely agree he is one of the greatest writers of all time and foundational to the history of ukrainian and russian literature, I really love his ukrainian books too and I feel they are an often overlooked part of his work
A tad bit odd to make a thread about the common public consensus on something though

i had a feeling while reading dead souls but it can’t possibly be that bad, can it? I have been considering picking up a new language for reading purposes only though

Baded. Gogol is the the backbone of russian literature and better than Tolstoi. I'm not afraid to say it.
