the historian eric hobsbawm, his series on the 19th century i think is probably the best general series to read....

If you live in the United States you need to read Locke and any of his critics to understand the system in which we operate. Montesquieu too. Read The Second Treatise Of Government and Spirit Of The Laws.

I also recommend Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic And The Spirit Of Capitalism.

I dunno what else to recommend you. Maybe Carl Schmitt and the lesser known Clinton Rossiter. Happy hunting!
